Is the K31 the PERFECT modern hunting rifle platform?

This is my K31 "hunter". Pillar bedded with a Weaver K4-1 in
Warne rings with an RSI mount. Also some typical 5 shot
targets shot with this rifle.

Doc,
Lovely rifle. With the RSI mount where did you get it and does the brass deflector work?

Where are these cheap mags? I have 4 rifles, 3 mags and need one. I am still kicking around the idea of making some large capacity models since I am a tin knocker but the shop is not exactly built yet.

can you pinpoint me what items you mouted on it ??? (links to shops ? )

I use a accumount clamp on mount- its very good but the rings packaged with the mount are complete junk. http://www.accumounts.com/

Mounts made by Mr St Marie are as good if not better: http://www.grafs.com/vendor/735

The scope rails use a 3/8" rimfire dovetail. I highly recommend Burris steel rimfire rings. Don't waste your money on cheaper aluminum rings, been there, done that, they won't hold zero.

This is the mount on my $59 'beater' k-31.

For whatever it's worth to others I found you can reload for the K31s using the Redding dies labled 7.55 X 55 Swiss and run .284 brass through them.

Running .284 brass through the first time is a little tough but the brass will then fire form perfectly for the next reloading.

There may be other manufacturers that make similar dies but it's important to get the Swiss dies.

The .284 brass isn't popular brass you might find at a range or found used but even with buying it new it sure beats what they want for the GP11 surplus ammo.

I'm suprised no one has mentioned the safety. I carried one afield once for deer and found the gun a bit too big, heavy and unwieldy. Especially compared to the Model 7 I usually carry. Sitting in the stand with a round chambered I thought pulling and twisting the safety was awkward and required alot of movement, ok if the deer is far away but not so good if it's close. Very accurate gun but not my cup of tea for carrying afield.

thx for all the information.
I have 3 K31, and surely will scope one of them now.-

its just that the swiss original mount costed 5 times the price of the rifles..

K31s can be a bit noisy

If you want to silently chamber a round, a "normal" bolt-action like a Swede Mauser is a better choice.

My K31, to "seat" the round and the bolt, I have to close it with some oomph. If there was a deer within 50 yards, he'd hear that and scoot.

As long as you don't mind carrying a rifle with a chambered round, it'll be a good hunting rifle. The safety seems very simple and effective.

K31 Scope Mount

Navy Joe --

Rock Solid Industries put this mount on my rifle. In fact
this was the first mount that went out of their shop. You
will recognize my rifle in the pics on their website.

I have found it to be a very solid mount. Ejection is perfect.

I also use the clamp-on scope mounts from Accumount and St. Marie.
They are an excellent product as well. Very solid and have on/off
capability that is second to none. I use them a lot for testing various
K31 rifles.

Good shooting, dxr

So - tell me why and off the shelf Ruger, Savage, or Browning or Remington or Tikka is a better choice at three times the money.

Well, I can't for the ones you mentioned. A Winchester Model 70 on the other hand...

As long as you don't mind carrying a rifle with a chambered round, it'll be a good hunting rifle.

Not an issue if you just keep it uncocked.

With a scope it goes better than 10 pounds. This is a deal killer for me, but for people who don't spend all day walking up and down mountains with their rifles -- or who are tougher then me -- it apparently isn't.

Could not agree with you more. Took my first hog with my K-31--and with handloaded .284Win brass. Mine wears a scout scope, though. The kind where you replace the rear sight with the scope mount.
