Is the safety on a Rem 700 supposed to lock the bolt?

When you apply the safety on a Rem 700, does it lock the bolt? I found a used 700 BDL .30-06 and it locked the bolt, but I didn't know if that was an older feature or if the current models do that as well.

The bolt lock feature is only found on the older models of the Remington 700. The newer versions do not lock the bolt when the gun is on safe. Remington has been upgrading older firearms to the newer system if the owner chooses. There even was a recall of certain firearms (models 600 and 660 come to mind) that had a nasty reputation for discharging when the gun was taken off safe in order to unload the rifle.

also on SOME 700s (not sure which ones) there is a feature that allows you to select whether the bolt is locked or unlocked with the safety on. teh safety can be pushed down vertically and it switches between teh two settings.

as i said this is NOT on all 700's and frankly i've never actually used one that DID have it, i've just been told of it repeatedly by folks who are a bit more "remington focused" that me.

I've worked on a lot of Remmy 700's, and I'm familiar with the older models that lock the bolt; however, I've never heard of nor seen a 700 that behaves as Detritus describes. I doubt that they exist.

I installed a timney trigger a while back that is exactly like Detritus described. Overall i have been unimpressed by it and ended up cutting off the little arm that locks the bolt because it would stick in the down position.

I have an old 721 where inorder to put the safety on you have to lift the bolt, engage safety, then close the bolt.

But the safety doesn't lock the bolt. Strangest stupid thing I've ever seen in my life.

Thanks for all the help. I think I'll pass on this particular rifle and wait for a newer one (but before the keyed bolt lockout device).

If it's a good deal and I wanted the upgrade, I'd buy the gun and ship it off to Remington for the upgrade. The information about the upgrade could help you negotiate a better deal.
