Smith makes a six-shot version on the 686, as well as the seven-shot version. I have owned a 2-1/2" and a 4" 6-shot 686, and I think they are perhaps the best all-around 357mag revolver you can find. A Colt Python may have a better action, but at two to three times the price. I'm sure Taurus makes a comparable model, but I don't think Taurus holds a candle to a Smith. Taurus makes some decent, servicable firearms, but nothing like an older S&W. If you can find an older model, like a 686-4, without the lock and mim parts, and with a hammer-mounted firing pin, you will not be disappointed.

I prefer N-frames, while the 686 is an L-frame. As you may know, the L-frame is smaller than the N-frame, but many feel it is the perfect size of the 357 mag cartridge. It's all subjective, but I'd encourage anyone to pick up a 4" 686.

Nice gun.

I'd think it would be available in a 6-shot version. In that barrel length, I'd recommend finding a nice Ruger Security-Six in a 2.75-inch barrel for a little more than half the price.

The 686 is a great gun and I'd grab a 7-shot if I could get my mitts on one.

Ditto

Big ditto.

I don't think the 686 platform shines in the 2.5" length (sold mine and went back to the K frame 19/66 2.5"). But in 4" it is a near-ideal .357 platform, and I prefer the feel and handling to the N frame 27s and 28s.

I own a 6 shot M686-2 and it's a great revolver.

Like said above, S&W makes a M686 (6 shot) and a M686+ (the plus is for +1 for a 7 shot model)

for something a little "different", look for a Bill Davis Couger

it's a Ruger Security-Six fitted with a Python barrel.

use the search function, there have been a couple of threads about them lately

The L-frame is a tad bulky for a 3" barrel. 4" i sabout perfect, IMO.

For target shooting, the 6" is good, and the discontinued 8 3/8" 686 is a hell of a fine toy.

What about a used "K" frame ie a model 19, 66, or one of the fixed sight K's. Still a 6 shooter justa tad lighter. Actually I prefer the "K" over the "L" frame. But my middle name is dinosaur.

heres the gun

i've never really liked the idea of a 7 shot revolver but i like the look of this one. is there one that looks like this but is a 6 shot?
Not to Hi-Jack the thread, but I have an older S&W Model 681 that I really like. They were popular for security guard/rent-a-cop work. Same as the Model 686 less the adjustable sights. My 4" has good balance and shoots to point of aim with 158 grain bullets. Just my 2 cents worth.. They can usually be had for less than the Model 686..

3 Inch 686 6 shot

I believe at one time Smith made some 3" 686's for either Customs or the Border Patrol. They turn up for sale from time to time. 4" 6 shot 686's should be quite common. They are a couple of ounces heavier than the 7 shot variety due to more meat in the cylinder.
