It's hard to go wrong with a gun that has such a long history. The Model 64 is the stainless steel version of the S&W Model 10, which was known as the M&P or Military & Police defore S&W started using number designations.

The M&P can be traced back to the first S&W Hand Ejectors, the basis for all modern S&W revolvers. $250 to buy into a piece of that history seems like a bargain to me. (I would also probably opt for the square butt and save some extra money, but I already have a couple of Model 65s, which is the .357 Magnum version of this gun).

Someone asked about a pencil barrel Model 64 - that would be a Model 67. Model 64s were heavy barrel & Model 67 were tapered. Why a different Model number - I do not know as the Model 10 came in both tapered and heavy barrel configuration.

model 67 has adjustable sights and model 64 has fixed sights.
there are pencil barrel model 64's out there, they are older than the heavier barrels I believe, and much harder to find

This is Wrong, the 64 came in both heavy and regular (pencil) barrels. The 67 is an adjustable sighted SS K frame.

Thats a excellent price. I would love to buy one to go with my model 10. Unfortunately, in California the only ones you can buy is the interlock and MIM firing pin and trigger. It has to be a private party sales to buy a older one.
To clarify the model 67. The model 67 is the Stainless Steel version of the famous model 15 combat masterpiece. The model 15/67 is the target version of the model 10/64. The model 15/67 has adjustable sights target hammer and trigger. The model 15/67 was the platform for the famous model 19/66 K frame magnum. I have a pre-15 combat masterpiece made in 1951. This revolver will top even my model 10 for accurately and smoothest of triggers.

Anyway, I would get one of those 64s but I can't. My bad luck!

Here's the 64 I just bought off GunBroker. It's a re-import from the Austrian Customs Police. Total cost was $285.

It shoots very well. I'll be shooting it again in the morning. In fact, it'll get a lot of rounds through it over the next couple of years.

And don't forget it is also the platform for the gorgeous model 18/Combat Masterpiece.

Your right. Forgot about the wonderful model 18 or K18 combat masterpiece. Along with the K17 these revolvers in my opinion the finest 22 caliber target 22s ever made.
