Is there anything the .40 S&W can do that the .45acp can't?

Let's see, what can a .40 do a .45 cant:
1. claim to be a bastard child of a far, far better round
2. produce almost as good ballistics at nearly twice the chamber pressure
3. make more noise and have a much nastier harder to control recoil pulse
4. create a whole new flavor of cool aid for idiots to swill.

Trajectory is the same for 180 gr 40 cal, and 185 gr 45 cal both shooting major, around 920 fps. Trajectory same, ft-lbs energy the same. Using same bullet size. Go to heavier 230 gr 45 cal bullet and things are different. More bullets in the mag and smaller grip frame for the 40. Heavier bullets for 45 cal are about only differences. If you need heavier go with a 45. If you need more chances at hitting more targets go with a 40.

100 yard .45 ACP

This is a ludicrous scenario at best. THIS is why rifles were invented. Handguns are not 100 yard weapons, yet I hit a squirrel with a .45 ACP ONCE at 300 yards at a thirty degree angle of elevation. It knocked the squirrel out when the bullet fell on its head. cliffy

So, is it reasonable to say that these threads generally are created to validate someone's wanting to buy a .40 or a .45?

They are both good rounds. I personally prefer the .45 but many law enforcement prefer the .40. Some say the .40 is easier to get back on target; I don't buy it. But, shoot what you have confidence in.
