today i bought a Remington 550 at a auction for 125. there was also ammo up for bids. each box had 500 rounds. there was a box of Herter's International long rifle hollow points, a box of Remington Hi-Speed Kleanbore long rifle hollow points, and 3 boxes of Federal Lightning long rifle High velocity non hollow points. i bought all this for 30 bucks. was that a good deal?

That's what, five bricks of 500 ea.? The total comes to $6 per brick. I'd say that's a pretty good price today, provided the ammo is fairly fresh stuff and has been kept dry. To give an example to compare to, the very first brick of .22LR i ever bought was $4.99 back in the early 70's, today the average price is about double that and sometimes more. For $6 a brick i'd say you did pretty good.

$30 for 2500 rounds of .22 ammo is not a bad price at all - just go to your local Academy Sports or Wal-Mart and you'll see that.

There might be a *little* collector's interest in the Herter's ammo.

It was obviously a good enough deal for you to buy it first and ask questions later.

.22 rimfire ammo, in my experience, degrades considerably faster than centerfire ammo. Some of the ammo may be quite old and may have many misfires. The annoyance factor may well outweigh your savings.

CK...

YMMV, but as long as it was kept dry, he should be okay even if the stuff is decades old. I've personally shot hundreds of rimfire and centerfire rounds that sat on the shelf in my attic or in closets for over thirty years before i used them up. Not one failed to go bang. I can't vouch for any imported ammo, i've never bought other than winchester, federal or remington, but all of those worked after decades on the shelf.

You did good.. A lot of guys over at rimfirecentral.com would kill for those red boxes of federal lightenings... The Kleanbore, if it has the white dogbone logo with KLEANBORE on it, green box, it's a collector's item.. I'm not sure about Herter's.... I suggest you check out Rimfirecentral.com and I'm pretty sure you'll be able to make monrey back and then a bit more on what you got, if you wish to. (especially on the lightenings).
