Is this an accurate list of the pistols in use by the US Military?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_individual_weapons_of_the_U.S._Armed_Forces

In active service

* M9 (Beretta 92FS, 9x19mm)
* M11 (SIG P228, 9x19mm)

In active service (some branches limited roles)

* Mk 24 Mod 0 (SIG P226 Navy, 9x19mm) (Naval Special Warfare)
* M9A1 (9x19mm) (USMC)
* MEU(SOC) pistol (.45 ACP) (MEU(SOC))
* SIG P229R DAK (.40 S&W) (USCG)
* M1911A1 (.45 ACP) (Army)

I've been reading about the Joint Combat Pistol program that became the Combat Pistol program that became the Joint Combat Pistol study. So what's the current state of affairs with regards to pistols and the US Military? Are efforts still underway to replace the M9?

Thanks.

Glock 19 used by AF fighter pilots.
I seen Glock 17 holsters (but n o Glock 17s) in the PJ armory along with a grip of old M1911s from Remington-Rand and Colt.
I also just read that the M11 (SIG P228, 9x19mm) that you listed above is used by AF OSI.

Also I think pistols are backburnered to rifles and other weapon systems. Pistols don't win wars, they may prevent wars but they don't win them.

um excluding special forces, you will have a narrower range of gun, if you include SF, well I'm pretty sure they have EVERYTHING, hell I wouldn't be surprised if some SF arms room had 10 of everything from around the world. I used to love it when top invited some of the guys from down the street (bragg, JFK training center, IE the green beret school) to come down and do foreign weapons orientation. Too bad they never would let us shoot them.. :(

The JSP was deep-sixed 2-3 years ago and contracts for new Berettas, magazines, and parts have been ongoing.

While there are those that would like to see an M-9 replacement, I wouldn't bet on it hitting serious consideration (trials) again for at least another 5 years, probably closer to 10.

Your list appears correct to me.

USAF still has the M1911A1 in inventory as well, but I'd suspect most of them are in AFSOC hands. https://newafpims.afnews.af.mil/shared/media/document/AFD-090413-047.pdf see p.34

As for the Glock 19s mentioned above, those were a one time purchase immediately before the first Persian Gulf War by an Air Guard or Reserve fighter squadron. Said squadron was still awaiting their M9s from the transition, and their 50 year old 1911s weren't in shape to go to the sandbox; so they got a COTS replacement for the duration of their involvement down range.

That touches on another thing about the now defunct JCP: even if they do resume it, it'll be years before you see it take full effect. Front line units / higher arming priority groups will get the new stuff first, and so on until years down the road the Guard & Reserve units finally get their turn for the now not so new weapon in that year's budget.

Also, with regard to Army & Air Force M1911A1s, and USMC MEU(SOC) modified M1911A1s, if units with enough leeway to do so like an older weapon they'll keep it along side the new stuff. As noted in the Airman Magazine The Book, the F4 Phantom is now the QF-4 full scale training target. Uncle Sam throws nothing away when it comes to weapons.

Too bad the damn things are pretty much indestructible, other wise I would think they were going to issue them to the taliban, er.. Afghan defense forces. Go to websites like global security and Janes, they will have the info, and defense new or review.

There doesn't appear to be a comprehensive list for all of the branches/units of the military. The link that ugaarguy posted shows the "inventory" for the Air Force. Based on that link, the Air Force only uses the M9, M11 and M1911A1.
