That Pedersoli Hawken is an excellent rifle and has a reputation to match. But then, so does the Lyman. Personally, I'd go for the Great Plains Rifle (I have 2) over the Hunter. And I think you can beat that price by looking around the bp dedicated shops: MidSouth Shooter's Supply web site

$400 more? No. $200 more? Well, now we're getting difficult...

I have a Kentucky long rifle make by Pedersoli. It's a very high quality flinter and I've never had any problems with it. It has a 1:45 twist rate so it shoots short conicals, bal-ets, and round balls just OK. I wish that it had a 1:66 twist barrel for optimal round ball shooting though. I've decided that 1:48 is a compromise that handles a wide variety of projectiles, but none particularly well. I also have a Lyman Great Plains Hunter percussion with a 1:32 fast twist barrel and it is deadly accurate with a wide variety of conicals, but probably not optimal for round balls. Its quality is not quite that of the Pedersoli but I like the rifle better, and it was a lot cheaper (Mid South Shooters Supply). The nice thing about it is that I can buy a drop-in 1:66 barrel for it, which I intend to do soon for round ball shooting. I take the GPH elk hunting in Colorado and use TC 370 gr. mini balls. At 50 yards I can lay Power Belt rounds one on top of the other all day long. I also use 2F Triple 7 powder exclusively. Both rifles are 50 cal.

Finish costs money

I have a lyman GPR. It is more accurate than I am. It is a nice rifle, but doesn't have the level of finish and hand fitting that a more expensive gun has. I handled a Pedersoli mountain rifle at cabela's about 9mo. ago... It was nice... the finish was awesome, the feel was better(imo) than the lyman... I should've bought it, but money was tight. It is still on my list. It is one of two production guns that I like better than my Lyman GPR(Austin Halleck is out of business)... that said, my lyman has been my goto gun for 3 yrs straight, it does everything I need it to do. Can I improve it's finish? Probably, but I won't improve accuracy that much.

I would like to have both, and someday I will, but now I am happy with my Lyman... I dream about the Pedersoli...Someday!

If money is no object, get both!:D

Are you a shooter or a gun admirer? If your value is in shooting, then "no". If your interest is in admiring (fit, finish, craftsmanship), then "yes", it IS worth $400 more. Personally, I like the Lyman "Great Plains".
