Is this Mossberg legal in CA?

I absolutely love this Mossberg 500


The question is, can I own one in CA? I am Military stationed here, and can own one in AZ. Does that matter? I would change the buttstock to this:

I would be careful making that stock change...if you can, try a Mossy out with that stock before you buy it...The pump release lever is located in a position that makes it nearly impossible to use with the AR-15 style stock. I tried one the other day, and was suprised at how difficult it was to use. I am a full on mossberg guy and have been since I had one in the Marines. I simply do not like that stock choice...it does look cool though.

I'd say YES to both. Top one has Muzzle Break & Pistol grip. 2 evil features OK.

Features don't matter on pump guns, only the overall length and barrel lengths matter. The AWB has nothing to do with Pumps.

I don't know what the rules are for .mil, but the top one appears to be a short barrel shotgun so that should be a no-no for civilians.

You have a point and I should give it a try to be sure. I wasn't going for the cool look. I like the shorter reach to the pump option. When I shot the M500 my support hand usually sits between the pump handle and the receiver. So a shorter stock option would put my hand on the pump constantly (in theory).

I will have to look when I get home (tomorrow morning). Pic won't load at work. I have been reading that 3 gun uses 20" barrels....so I guess this one would be out! lol Also, it's a breaching barrel, so I guess that makes a difference too. Eh, the things I am trying to learn! lol

The top one is legal I know. Local gun shop got in a shipment of them awhile back and sold out in a couple days. The clerk commented that it was "scary" how fast the things sold..

Both of those Mossberg shotguns are legal in CA. Most gunstores will have them especially Turners.

Brig is right on with this. I bought that stock and put it on...couldn't easily use the pump release lever. Also the stock made it hard to get a good sight picture using the normal bead sight. Back to the black synthetic I went...at least until I can get an Eotech 512 Tactical Holo Sight!

The CA Assault Weapon definitions always start with "A semiautomatic..." so you can do whatever you want to your pump shotgun so long as you don't shorten it to "short-barreled shotgun" length, which is a barrel length less than 18 inces, or a total overall length of less than 26 inches. Add all the evil features known to man - pistol grip, forward pistol grip, telescoping stock, etc. Your're fine.

Yes. I don't have much experience with shotguns, but I believe it's one of the best additions one can make to a shotgun. I've been to the range 3 times now and each time I shot 100-120 rounds without even a sore shoulder. It's awesome!

Another vote for NOT using the pistolgrip on the 500 series. The slide release lever is EXTREMELY akward to use with a pistolgrip. One of the advantages of a 500/590 over the 870 is the placement of the safety and slide release. It's so natural to use the middle finger when your trigger finger is either on the trigger or resting in the ready position to the side of the trigger. Using anything but a traditional rifle stock messes up that ergonomic, and could cost you a second or two when seconds count. My friend has one with that stock, and I can't stand it.
