For those who own a Mossberg 500 or a Mossberg 590, does it rattle? If so, does it rattle a lot or just a little?

A lot of Remington 870 owners say that one of the reasons they dislike the Mossberg 500 is because it rattles, is this true?

My Mossy 500 fore end will rattle if you shake it vigorously, unless your hand is on it. Then it is noiseless.

When you shake it vigorously, does it rattle a lot or only a litte?

Also, does it rattle when you shoot it?

By the way, thanks for the reply.

I just shook mine real hard to check and no noise except for the slide just a little but that's to be expected. Maybe a slight clicking but not enough to give away your presence and you wouldn't be shaking it real hard anyway.

My Benneli makes a lot more noise. (but it's one of the best bird guns I own so no complaints here).:)

Like you said the reason they talk down to Mossies is because they like the 870s..... I on the other hand can slander 870s all day long and praise the mossy.

It's just your personal preference.:)

I cant hear a rattle over the boom when I fire mine. It does rattle a little when I am handling it one handed, silent when I use both hands. Never rattled when I had it in the stand though, but I move a bit slower up there.

The fore-end rattles a lot, compared to the 870. It's not something that can't be dealt with, though

Also, does it rattle when you shoot it?

I dunno. It makes a much bigger noise when I shoot it.

The best way to find out, is to go to a local shop and handle one. It's kind of subjective. I would say my moss 500 doesn't rattle much. However, I've never tried to sneak up on anything with it.

So, the Mossberg 500 or 590 rattles only a little bit?

I have a brand new 590 with a parkerized finish. It does NOT rattle. I have a five year old 500....NO RATTLE. I have a 25 year old Coast to Coast Mossberg 500.....NO RATTLE. Ofcourse some guys complain about the rattle. I have no problems with my Mossy's "Rattling".

Of the 3 moss. 500's I've owned in the last 30 yrs, both 12 ga. rattled noticeably more than any of my other pumps, but it was the 20 ga that bordered on the ridiculous. Even zipped it into the case, you could wiggle it, & everyone could tell which gun I'd brought along.
The cause appears to be that the plastic slide tube has an inside diameter far bigger than the O/D of the mag tube, resulting in a good deal of sloppiness.

Since Mossberg hasn't done anything to correct this in the 48 odd years they've built this model, I just assume they believe that the excess play is required to ensure relieable operation.

Even though I no longer own a 500, preferring other quieter pumps instead, one can't deny that the design does work, & always goes bang.

Plastic slide tube? Now that is BS:fire:. The Mossberg has several quirks, I didn't design the thing, so I can't answer the whys. The tube is metal, the action bars are pinned to the tube while the 870's are soldered on. The "rattle" some find on the gun doesn't effect the reliabilty of the shotgun. If you have both hands on it there is no rattle.

Finaly always remember, "Don't shake the baby, err shotgun".

Mine rattles quite a bit. Than again it's quite old and I don't really know it's history very well. From the looks of it it's been abused and worked hard.

Mike, the new guy LOL

The one I mentioned above does rattle a lot, maybe more than it should. Wich leads me to a question..
How do you know when it's time to tighten up things in a shotgun? It shoots fine with light bird loads, but anything heavier like slugs will halfway eject the shell from the chamber. I don't mind it rattling, as you said with both hands on it, its fine. But, where does a loose action and reliability end, and future problems begin?
And BTW, my apologies to the original poster, didn't mean to hijack the thread...

Mike

I bought a 500A literally yesterday.

I played around with it and found the following noises:

-foregrip rattles a bit when you shake it vigorously
-the tension spring for the mag tube slides a bit when empty (sounds like a really small slinky almost)

niether should lead to or cause problems

You will find most pumps unlock has part of the firing process. This is intended to help with the speed of reloading. On stronger loads the forces of recoil are going to help you open the gun. I don't have a good answer for you has to when you should have it looked at. That said my 500 and 870 are each about 20 years old. Actualy the 870 is probably older then that since it is a 2 3/4" shell only model.

I can go to the safe and check to see if mine rattles, but then I changed my mind.....because I really don't care....I just don't shake it violently and I guess I'll never find out, and I'm ok with that....

As long as it shoot fine and is not falling apart, I don't think it's that relevant whether it rattles or not....unless someone can tell me otherwise.
