You will find most pumps unlock has part of the firing process. This is intended to help with the speed of reloading. On stronger loads the forces of recoil are going to help you open the gun. I don't have a good answer for you has to when you should have it looked at. That said my 500 and 870 are each about 20 years old. Actualy the 870 is probably older then that since it is a 2 3/4" shell only model.
DMR, thank you! You actually did answer my question. The unlocking with stronger loads was the only real problem I've had with it. Other than it rattlingLOL But, as long as it's not a symptom of a greater problem, I dont mind, gives it character.
Mine is technically NOT a mossberg 500 actually. It's a Revelation, sold by Western Auto many years ago. It's made on the Mossy 500 design, and as far as I can tell pretty close. I'm NOT a gunsmith, so don't quote me on thatLOL But, when I had it apart everything in the Mossberg 500 schematic's seemed to match up to this one.
Aren;t old shotguns kool? Hope your 870 lasts many years more...
