Just picked up my brand new in box M&P 45 yesterday. Upon field stripping it for its initial clean/lube, I noticed their was very slight wear marks on the barrel, and the hood of the barrel. The bore was rather dirty too. This was definitely definitely a new gun because they pulled it right from the back. I will let you guys know how she shoots next week!

Yup. There really is no such thing as an "unfired gun". For good reason. You want that gun to be proofed and test fired. (unless it's a Kimber...)

...maybe no fired casing

Several mfgs no longer include a fired casing as NY quit the requirement a few years ago and Maryland just dropped the program. I had a habit of taking the shell from it's sealed envelope and smashing it flat w/ a hammer before throwing it out in a cat litter bag. The science behind it was laughable at best. Any scrape to the firing pin would make matching brass impossible.

Yup, the idea behind placing fired cases in a database was pretty stupid. Go to any range and pick up other people's brass and sprinkle them all over your crime scene. Like that should even be accepted in a court of law as "evidence". Sounds like a really bad TV show plot. And simply swapping parts in most guns will change the "signature". Millions of taxpayers dollars have been wasted on this madness. These are the same people who are bloviating about "smart guns" today. Where's my duct tape........

Hey, great idea. JUST KIDDING!

But the idea of a data base for that stuff is not realistic.

Smashing a perfectly good case just to show pique at a law that doesn't affect you is, well, sort of pointless.

If it was me, I would send it back. That looks like a little more wear than factory test firing. that many serrations on the barrel top looks suspicious. You have multiple wear lines on top and heavy slide marks on the bottom. That is not from factory test firing. How is the rifling inside?

Rather than wear marks, they look more like 'chatter' marks.
Was this reputable establishment? possible that gun was loaned out and then taken bacK?

At the very least I would contact S&W with your photos.
