Yesterday I was killing time in my favourite gunshop and I saw this sporterized Czech BRNO Mauser 98 rechambered in 30-06.
Wood stock (a real sporter stock not a cut-down military one), kind of economic, no frills (no forearm and pistol grip caps, just few basic engravings) but in very good shape, no major scratches , just the usual little scuff here and there.....raised cheeckrest, swivel studs and a decent leather sling.
The work seems to be done properly, no misalignment, no canted sights, etc....everything is nicely fitted together.
Butt plate is missing (the previous owner put a slip on recoil pad on)
It has iron sights (rear adjustable both vertically and horizontally) and it is drilled for scope (Leupold mount I think)
Barrel is 24", action is buttery smoth, no broken parts, magazine is in excellent shape, no rust and bluing is 70-80%....crown is good, rifling is sharp.
Asking price is $165 but the shop owner is willing to let it go for $140 out of the door.
What do you think?? It is a good price??? You need about $25 for a good recoil pad and the price of a Leupold mount for the scope.

I may be interested in another cheap 30-06...and one of my friend is looking for one....this could be a good choice..

Opinions???

Regards

I would have bought it for that

however you say "rechambered"

8mm Mauser bbl + 30/06 reamer = 8mm06

Sorry for the misunderstanding...no it is entirely rebarreled in 30-06 and the headspace has been checked.

Krochus the shop is closed today!!! :D:D

However another correction is necessary (I fixed the original post too)
The stock is not a cut-down military stock but a real sporter stock...basically the only military piece in that rifle is the action itself.

I think I may pick it up tomorrow, either for me or for my friend.

its a good rifle. buy it up!! down the line, you can add a custom stock, rebarrel if you want. its a good deal.

I suspect the action alone is worth the price.

I bought a custom Model 70 Winchester in 25-06 with an aftermarket trigger, Fajen stock, and 3x12x50 Burris Black Diamond for $375...:D

Most guys shy away from custom stuff. I have zero need for a big bore and I'd most likely buy it if it were local, particularly at that price.
