Is your gun a tool?

I actually own a revolver that was used as a hammer, and now it's a paperweight/conversation piece... so I guess it's still a tool.
The whole designed to kill business is just not true of many firearms. I shot NRA smallbore for years, and none of the rifles were designed to do anything but punch holes in targets. Have your friend have a look at some Olympic competition guns. They are tools like soccer balls are tools; you use them in a sport that teaches you muscular control, coordination, and most of all concentration. I was diagnosed as ADD as a kid, and I credit NRA smallbore rifle shooting with taming that pretty quickly; it was a brilliant tool. Just not for nails.

Once had to run a coax cable out of my buddy's trailer. We didn't have a drill, so a 357 put the perfect sized hole in the floor. Looking back, we should have looked under the trailer first, even though there was no incident. Oh, and by the way, if you ever think about firing a 357 in an enclosed space, get some bloody hearing protection.

Welcome to The High Road, xdoctor — oh, wait: a .357 indoors, w/o any hearing protection — :uhoh:

WELCOME TO THE HIGH ROAD, XDOCTOR!

Lordy lordy, the uses I've put firearms to on the Compound. Here's a short list:

Signaling: My roommate used her sidearm to signal neighbors for help several times.

Cutting out snags: I've taken out about twenty Spruce snags with my Mosin. The spruce are often leaning on each other, so that to cut down one with a chainsaw puts you at risk from the other falling on you. Safer to stand back 100 ft. and shoot them down. Works like a charm.

Disposing of propane canisters: Even "empty" propane canisters can have some juice in them, so you don't want to toss them in the burn barrel. I line them up and blast them from a safe distance, then dispose of the de-pessurized containers.

Punching holes in burn barrels for air circulation

Scaring off nogoodnicks

Testing ice thickness on the lake.

Knocking heavy snow loads off overhanging branches and bent trees

The bullets are always flying at the compound :p

Shot down some "trash" trees that were occluding my fields of fire! :)

I've seen a lot of sailboat races started by a shotgun blast.

My favorite use in the past was shooting down a sprig of mistletoe from the top of a tree.

It's exercise equipment. Reduces stress. I should get my MD to prescribe one and make it medically deductible. We should all do that.

Cosmoline we used to have a burn barrel that we used to always shoot. the thinking was we needed more holes so stuff would burn better.

One time we needed to get into an old car that was parked on the back 40. It was locked up tight and the locks were all rusty. I deced that the best way to get it opened would be my Mossberg 500. It punched a nice clean 12 GA sized hole in each door and the rear trunk. The trunk was the most insteresting because when I shot out the the lock, the trunk still had enough tension that it sprung right open. It almost looked like I had opened it with a keyless entry FOB.

Evil orange clay discs were attacking me by gliding away, so I did humanity a service by making them less aerodynamic. ;)

By 2 handguns are very expensive hole punchers. .355 and .357 varieties.

Tools

Mixed a little Hoppes with 7 UP & ice when I was trying to catch a buzz........

Used an M16 to carve a tree-trunk sculpture........

Smacked my roomate with a Lorcin for the heck of it............

BTW, what's a burn barrel?

Only a feeble attempt at humor/it was Breakfree, not Hoppes.......

I've always used guns for their specified purpose, but as an Armorer in the Army, I saw pistols used for hammers, rifles used for shovels, prybars, hammers, table legs, and ocasionally for shooting!:p
