Isn’t it almost time for the Walmart rifle clearance?

I was looking at my Walmart purchase history from August 2020 and saw my Savage Axis 270 that I paid $124 for. That reminded me that this is about the time WalMart has cleared out guns prior to the new fall stock in previous years. A member had been gracious enough to post links to inventory searches on Brickseek to help see what bargains were available at which stores. If I can find those links I’ll duplicate them here.

Anybody seeing Walmart bargains yet?

I certainly do! But I'm not passing on rifles like the Savage Axis XP 270 & 30-06 that i purchased in 2020 for $24 each after rebate. I just traded the 30-06 towards a lefthanded 308 that my LGS had in the rack for a long time. We both are happy.

No kidding, I like to buy from gun shops too but I just couldn't pass up the Axis 6.5 creedmoor I bought during those closeouts for $52 including tax, and then received back a $50 rebate.

Brickseek used to list them, but I worked there during the big 2020 clearance, and the Sporting Goods manager was my best friend. We both actually had to wait 24 hours after each markdown before we could buy them, company rule.
I bought an Axis II heavy varmint barreled .223 with a 4-12 Bushnell on it for $29, after the $50 Savage rebate.

Your best bet is to just keep checking everytime you stop in for something. That and keep an eye on any threads here on THR that mention Walmart gun clearances.

My closest Walmart has sporting goods including ammo and scopes but no guns.
The store 15 miles away does have guns
It appears that each local Walmart decides on its gun inventory, depending on the pro- or antigun sentiments in the area. Northern Virginia, where I live, is a hotbed of antigun soccer moms. Walmart wants to avoid controversy. The thing is, there's a Cabela's about 15 miles further out from Washington that's doing a brisk gun business. It's as if there's an invisible line somewhere in the outer suburbs, that when you pass it, the mindset changes completely.

Not sure about Walmarts business model? The city that I live in now in WI is about pro hunting/gun as it can be. I think it has something to do with population size. As far as Virginia the 270 & 30-06 I purchased was in Petersburg VA. I was going to buy a rifle in Gordonsville VA, but couldn't because the couple of people that were trained or qualified to sell firearms were on the days off while I was there. I liked VA gun laws friendly to non residents. I lived in South Carolina at the time!

When the liberals in Santa Fe decided we needed universal background checks Walmart used that as an excuse to quit gun sales in NM. Their excuse was that they didn't have personnel trained to do the checks and was not going to to spend the money to do so. Horse pucky! They had the people to do it while the were selling guns and some of them are still employed ln my local store.

To an extent, regional management decides according to population/ hunting demographics. The more rural area the store's in, the more outdoor sports will be represented. The is also some level of input/control at the store level, in that Store Managers have veto control on larger orders, particularly seasonal.

My best friend at the time of the 2020 gun clearance had ordered large quantities of Trap loads, and they always sold. He would even order large orders for individuals. When COVID hit, management in Arkansas cut that off; when ammo started flow again, the new store manager still kept inventory levels down to next to nothing. The current store manager has raised the stock levels, and there is usually some Trap loads there. Rifle ammo is pretty well back to pre COVID level, though minus .223, 7.62x39, and FMJ .308.
If an anti store manager wants to flex, they can cut ammo ordering to zero, and order the guns be kept in the lockup in back. Eventually, guns would be taken off the Mods. Ironically, they'd probably be clearances out.

I ended up with 5 savage axis, 3 in 243, 2 in 22-250 and a Remington 700 in .223. The most I paid for any of them way $79 for the rem 700.
The synthetic stocked axis were $49 before tax with a $50 rebate so nearly free.
I still have a few of them around, great shooters…..used the rebate check to buy a savage 340 in 30-30 at a local pawnshop. The Walmart clearance guns worked out really well for me

I am rural and my Walmart is so small that there isn’t much space for it. No guns, itty bitty ammo selection.
Course the last gun I bought at Walmart was a handgun. I don’t have to tell you how long ago that was.

SE Wisconsin, meaning Kenosha, Racine, Walworth, Waukesha counties,, no guns to be had. Down into Illinois, at least Lake and McHenry counties, same thing. So no cheap guns for us!

Almost certainly not in this millennium unless you live in Alaska. Most were gone by the mid-90’s I believe.

I haven't seen anything for awhile. I do remember this past year when I was checking on ammo one Walmart had some black power/muzzleloaders on clearance. They were stupid cheap, only saw them once
