Revealed: Israel plans nuclear strike on Iran
Uzi Mahnaimi, New York and Sarah Baxter, Washington

ISRAEL has drawn up secret plans to destroy Iran’s uranium enrichment facilities with tactical nuclear weapons.
Two Israeli air force squadrons are training to blow up an Iranian facility using low-yield nuclear “bunker-busters”, according to several Israeli military sources.

The attack would be the first with nuclear weapons since 1945, when the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Israeli weapons would each have a force equivalent to one-fifteenth of the Hiroshima bomb.

Under the plans, conventional laser-guided bombs would open “tunnels” into the targets. “Mini-nukes” would then immediately be fired into a plant at Natanz, exploding deep underground to reduce the risk of radioactive fallout.

“As soon as the green light is given, it will be one mission, one strike and the Iranian nuclear project will be demolished,” said one of the sources.

The plans, disclosed to The Sunday Times last week, have been prompted in part by the Israeli intelligence service Mossad’s assessment that Iran is on the verge of producing enough enriched uranium to make nuclear weapons within two years.

Israeli military commanders believe conventional strikes may no longer be enough to annihilate increasingly well-defended enrichment facilities. Several have been built beneath at least 70ft of concrete and rock. However, the nuclear-tipped bunker-busters would be used only if a conventional attack was ruled out and if the United States declined to intervene, senior sources said.

Israeli and American officials have met several times to consider military action. Military analysts said the disclosure of the plans could be intended to put pressure on Tehran to halt enrichment, cajole America into action or soften up world opinion in advance of an Israeli attack.

Some analysts warned that Iranian retaliation for such a strike could range from disruption of oil supplies to the West to terrorist attacks against Jewish targets around the world.

Israel has identified three prime targets south of Tehran which are believed to be involved in Iran’s nuclear programme:

Natanz, where thousands of centrifuges are being installed for uranium enrichment

A uranium conversion facility near Isfahan where, according to a statement by an Iranian vice-president last week, 250 tons of gas for the enrichment process have been stored in tunnels

A heavy water reactor at Arak, which may in future produce enough plutonium for a bomb
Israeli officials believe that destroying all three sites would delay Iran’s nuclear programme indefinitely and prevent them from having to live in fear of a “second Holocaust”.

The Israeli government has warned repeatedly that it will never allow nuclear weapons to be made in Iran, whose president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has declared that “Israel must be wiped off the map”.

Robert Gates, the new US defence secretary, has described military action against Iran as a “last resort”, leading Israeli officials to conclude that it will be left to them to strike.
Israeli pilots have flown to Gibraltar in recent weeks to train for the 2,000-mile round trip to the Iranian targets. Three possible routes have been mapped out, including one over Turkey.

Air force squadrons based at Hatzerim in the Negev desert and Tel Nof, south of Tel Aviv, have trained to use Israel’s tactical nuclear weapons on the mission. The preparations have been overseen by Major General Eliezer Shkedi, commander of the Israeli air force.

Sources close to the Pentagon said the United States was highly unlikely to give approval for tactical nuclear weapons to be used. One source said Israel would have to seek approval “after the event”, as it did when it crippled Iraq’s nuclear reactor at Osirak with airstrikes in 1981.

Scientists have calculated that although contamination from the bunker-busters could be limited, tons of radioactive uranium compounds would be released.

The Israelis believe that Iran’s retaliation would be constrained by fear of a second strike if it were to launch its Shehab-3 ballistic missiles at Israel.

However, American experts warned of repercussions, including widespread protests that could destabilise parts of the Islamic world friendly to the West.

Colonel Sam Gardiner, a Pentagon adviser, said Iran could try to close the Strait of Hormuz, the route for 20% of the world’s oil.

Some sources in Washington said they doubted if Israel would have the nerve to attack Iran. However, Dr Ephraim Sneh, the deputy Israeli defence minister, said last month: “The time is approaching when Israel and the international community will have to decide whether to take military action against Iran.”

I have no doubt that Israel has been planning for this for years, and even more so since Iran's "Nuclear Energy" program has gone into high gear. Without nuclear power Iran would have nothing else to use for energy, certainly not that black gold they are sitting on.
I give it less than 2 years...

In case anyone forgot, we planned to nuke the Soviets for many years and suspect we still have those plans.

We probably have a plan to nuke Mexico too, it's just a plan.

We trained all during the Cold War for it, why is this different?

If they are secret plans, how did it come to be written about in a news story? This is probably more speculation than anything else. And I seriously doubt Israel will attack Iran. That would be like me walking into the Bears locker room and Kicking Urlacher in the head. Not the brightest idea.

If Urlacher had been saying for years that at his first chance he was going to kill you and your family, and he had just got a gun, and was on his way to the store to get ammo all the while eyeballing you and repeating his threats...you might punch him too. Especially if you had the Colts as backup.

I guess this means Israel is finally admitting that they even have nukes, then?

Israel has had nuclear weapons for quite some time, since the 50's. The French built the reactor but failed to finish it so the Israelis completed it. It is the Dimona research facility in the negev desert. It's quite old but here is a video on it

Israel has multiple platform systems, it's rumoured they can use tomahawk missiles from their dolphin subs. It's known for a fact they have ICBM's (Jericho-2 and Jericho-3 missiles) as they can launch satellites into space via the Shavit launcher. They also can launch from plane.

Personally I don't think Israel will nuke Iran, it may attack it's reactors though, don't forget Israel attacked Iraqs reactors and crippled the Osirak reactor by flying below the radar.

China has plans to nuke us, we have plans to nuke China, NoKor and probably Israel too. Every nation has war plans. No news here, just an alarmist media.

Well, let's think about this. The nutjob that's running the show in Iran right now has said, over and over again, that Israel is going to be destroyed, wiped off the map, exterminated, etc.

Is anyone surprised then that Israel has plans to prevent Iran from getting nukes? Oh, I'm sure there are many that will develop a sense of moral outrage anyway, but if you look at it in terms of pure logic, Israel's plans make perfect sense.

The UK press just likes to bash Israel. You don't see them posting stories that the US has plans to nuke North Korea, but we certainly do.

I won't disagree with you on that, seems like all the anti-zionist and pro palestinian documentations have British journalists. I really don't understand the whole reason they like to pick on Israel.

Because they know Israel will just take it. Real tough guys, only picking on those they know will not fight back. The more they single-out Israel the more they show how afraid they are of radical Islamists.

Incidentally, a pre-emptive strike on peaceful innocent Iran's nuclear facilities may not be unjustified, but doing so with a nuclear weapon would be uncalled for, and really would lead to Isreal feeling much harsher repercussions than they'd ever imagine.

I still worry that Iran is goading Israel into their traditional airstrike, planning to retaliate immediately with a pre-constructed nuclear warhead of some type.

Israel's best option would probably be for someone to take out Ahmadinejad from the book depository, or if he ate something that glows in the dark, etc. There is no apparant positive outcome possible from conflict with Iran.

Using nuclear weapons for this strike (or any other attack, for that matter) is a really, really Bad Idea.

Israel gets the ball rolling with two tactical nukes busting fortified bunkers. Iran retaliates with a couple of tactical nukes they either developed themselves or "borrowed" from the old Soviet arsenal, and detonates them in the atmosphere. Israel retaliates with several more tactical nukes on Iran's missile bases and infrastructure. Iran hits Israel with a full scale strategic thermonuclear warhead. The World reduces Iran to a giant glass parking lot. If we're lucky, it stops there, with a portion of the middle east irradiated and relatively uninhabitable. If we're not so lucky, nuclear capable nations sympathetic to Iran's cause (the obliteration of Israel) fire off their nukes and it's TEOTWAWKI.

edit; but on the plus side we can relabel maps and globes, replacing Iran with Free Parking. ;)

Look at Israel's track record

IF, and I think it is a pretty big if, but IF Israel decides to really hit Iran, it will be not be a little pity pat affair. They have been relatively restrained with the Pal, and other locals because they are going after Israel with small stuff. But if they feel Iran really has and may actually use Nukes, they will hit them with A LOAD! And unlike the US Government they will not worry about anything except getting the Job done. They will strike in a fashion to leave themselves protected and quickly efficiently eliminate the threat. Remember they actually have good intell, and the skills and necessary will to use them.

The Beeb and the Times have been notorious Israel bashers since, oh, roughly the Johnson Administration. You'll notice that there are "plans" and a lot of "would" "could" "might" and other weasel words. If Israel does attack Iran - and they are officially in a state of war with them - the Zionist Butchers will be pilloried. If they don't, the Zionist Butchers were thwarted in their nefarious plot by the courageous British Press. Win for the Times either way.

As has been pointed out, any government with a military makes contingency plans for fighting anyone they might have to fight. We have plans for attacking Canada, taking over Mexico, fighting with Russia and nuking China. Russia has plans to fight us, China, Georgia, Ukraine and probably the Baltic states. And so on.

If this does come from Jerusalme it's almost certainly an oblique form of communication with Iran. You'll note that it comes the day after Iran said "We don't have nukes, but if you push us we will nuke you." Think of it like India-Pakistan. India sets off four nukes so Pakistan blows up five.

the logistical details for such a plan are a nightmare. Basically, the pilots that fly there know that they have little chance of making it back alive.

that guy in iran is not a nut job. he is very dangerous though, both to israel and the usa. the iranians are not flea bitten camel jockeys. they are an ancient and very sophisticated culture.they are masters of brinkmanship. BTW, they are caucasian not arab.

like i said, he is very dangerous....but also cunning. right now they have a BIG problem with oil revenues....they aren't getting any to speak of from their oil!!

this is going to be very interesting to watch over the next 2 years or less.

it seems that putting an admiral in charge of CENTCOM is a very shrewd move on Bush's part. although i know he didn't come up with the idea. it must have been Gates who thought of it.
