Issues with Winchester SPP

I contacted Winchester. Here's hoping they do something about them.
I’ve not had any issues with the Win SPP that I’ve tried, I hope you get it sorted out. I would check to make sure they’re fully seated, that could exacerbate the problem.

I started rooting around in my primer box and found out I actually have 15 unopened boxes of that lot number . Each box of 100 has that green antitheft device on them so I must have bought them at Academy -- They break-up the bricks and sell each pack individually.

Winchester sent a RMA and truck to pick up the primers.
My 1900+ WSPM i returned took a very long time to resolve. Olin/Winchester sent me a check that did NOT cover my cost to replace. After i was told new fresh primers would be shipped to me. Did NOT happen.

As i said before. (Needs Repeating) Poor Customer Service.

They told me it’d take 6-8 weeks after they got the primers to resolve, so yeah, they’re not fast.

Prices triple.....and q.c. gets cut into a third.... welcome to the new world.
They got a military contract to supply primer to them. When they did that the military wanted a way to know which primer is theirs and which are civilian primers. Winchester decided to sell the red primers to the mililitary and start using the black laquer on the SPP they sell us to make the Military happy.

These black laquered primers are garbage, They must have dropped all quality control on them and only perform QA on what they sell the military.

I finally got rid of the rest of the ones I had and won't be buying any more.

They will send them to their ballistics lab for testing. Do you have to send them back by Old Dominion Freight?
Good luck.

These were black primers, some I’ve bought were red. Yes, Old Dominion picked them up.

I'm sorry, I thought this was already common knowledge, but I'll explain it again.

Black laquer- Primed with Obamacompound, 18-24 months and the rounds expire and become duds.

Red- Good forever

Yep Red WIN primers are good, black are crap. But what I’ve found is the black compound primers are hard as hell and the cups are taller. If they’re in tolerance, they used it all!!!🙄. I was getting several duds until I started seating the hell out of them. They will work for range use but you have to mash the hell out of them like they are small rifle magnums. Basically the worst combination of crap they could sell to civilians. I quit buying anything Winchester after this latest BS.

Me too, after my latest experience. Unfortunately I have upwards of 5000 Winchester primers in several varieties left. I hope they send me a check for the primers I returned and not more primers.

Coming to this thread late. I've successfully used winchester primers for three decades. Only this past year I've experienced dud primers at the rate of 3-4%. These were all SPP red compound purchased prior to the covid era and stored in my climate controlled safe room. Initially I thought it was a weak mainspring in my S&W model 15 but it has happened in my S&W shield, Glock 48, and now my new SA-35. All my primers get eyeballed prior to seating and visibly look OK. I've doubled checked seating depth and it's spot on. I have several thousand left so I guess they'll serve as random "ball and dummy" rounds.

I'm glad to read that the problems are with WSP and WSPM. I have quite a few WSR and WLP. I've gone through a couple thousand of each with no issues.

One good thing I can report about the Black SPP is that they will run through my new Lee APP deluxe. I loaded some .357mags with them after I fixed the APP deluxe so it would prime straight up instead of sideways. They ran right through it.
I was happy because I had no other way to use the rest of that first batch of them, since they won't run through my other priming systems.

I've had pretty good luck with the Red primer I was buying. I was using them for over 50 years.

at my house, empty 18 wheeler tractor trailer. Driver put primers in truck cab, with him.
I think they are the only trucking company that will still haul them according to Winchester.

Just to close this thread, Winchester is sending me 2000 SPP to replace those I sent back. They tested them and found them to be defective.

I’ve got thousands of other Winchester primers, but that one lot is the only one I’ve had problems with. Still, I’m sticking to CCI and Federal if they are available. I don’t see many Remington primers on the shelf locally.

I still have 5000 of the red primers and I'm keeping them, I only had 1000 of the black ones and had most of them gone before I figured out the primers were causing my problems.
It wasn't worth it to me after already shooting most of them to send the rest of them back.

I'm really glad Winchester replaced your primers for you. I won't be buying any more either unless I'm really desperate. I don't see that happening.
