As some of you guys may know I have been asking for tips for deer hunting and asking various other questions all leading up to this weekend. I posted my first hunting experience yesterday evening after hunting that morning. It can be found here:http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=736126

Today was my second day of deer hunting EVER and it was a sucessful one. I start my day at 4:00 am this morning getting a shower (scent free soap) and getting dressed in all my camo attire. I make the drive over to my mentors hunting spot where he is meeting me I get there a little early so I'm waiting for him. It's a chilly 30* morning the crescent moon and stars brightly shining in the cloudless night sky. He shows up at 5:30 am and we walk across the creek and head out to the stand its a long 1/2 mile walk trying to be as quiet and quick as possible. Its a bright night we can see the path without using our flashlights. We make it to the shooting house and climb inside the windows are closed we turn on the tap light and continue to getting ready. I hear the clicks of magazines being loaded and bolts being closed under the dim light both weapons are rested in the corners and the light switches off.

It's getting close to daylight so we slowly open the windows to survey the field as I open the window to my right I see a sillhouette about 50 yards away looking right at me. It's still dark so we just sit back and quietly wait. That doe stands there for a few minutes and moves on to the gap in the woods behind us towards the field. It's 5:56 am and the sun is barely peeking over the trees a doe is standing in the clearing to my right ~60yds away staring straight at me.

I get the go ahead from my mentor to shoot only if I can clearly see the deer in my crosshairs so I slowly edge my Tikka T3 .270 Win out of the corner and onto the window sill all the while that doe is staring at me. I dial my scopes power down to 4x power and find the doe in my crosshair. I can clearly see the doe and I give the signal that I have a shot. I place the crosshair directly on the brisket and take a deep breath my crosshairs are steady as I squeeze the trigger all I see if a bright flash and a few deer run off to my right out of sight. It's 5:57 am

I can hardly keep my composure I'm literally shaking wondering was it a good shot, did I miss, did it fall, how far did it run, all the bad stuff. We wait it seems like an excruciating 30 minutes and deer keep showing up so we just wait to see what happens its been an hour now and a doe eases into the field she is casually grazing and my "mentor" decides to take a shot. Its a perfect broadside shot at ~75 yards he raises his Remington Sportsman 74 .30-06 and drops that doe where she stood.

After waiting another 30 minutes we climb down and go to look for blood where my deer was standing. We don't find blood but 30 yards from where she was there she is down and expired. The entrance wound was dead center in the brisket and the bullet never exited. Upon gutting the top half of the heart was completely gone with no other evidence of damage. We suspect the bullet was inside the gut pile somewhere. She had to die quickly which I am very thankful for. Here are the pics of the 2 does the first two pictures are the doe that I shot and the other two are the doe my mentor shot. ENJOY! Sorry for the novel of a story but I'm still pumped and didn't want to miss a single detail

Congrats on your hunt! Sounds like things went very well and you hit the doe with a great shot. I read your other post....this one certainly had a better ending! ;)

Congratulations. I'm sure you will enjoy your first feed from this animal. As long as you are confident you can hit a tennis ball at those distances, the animal will pass much quicker when shot behind the ear. Good luck with your future hunts.

Thanks Arizona. It definitely had a better ending I've had great time hunting and glad that I got me a deer. The day couldn't have been better, the rifle performed perfectly, my handloaded ammunition performed perfectly, and the idiot behind the rifle did OK LOL. I'm still excited and can't believe it. I'm hooked for life.

I'm confident in my skills to shooting but I will avoid headshots if at all possible. I can't stand the thought of missing and blowing a deers jaw off and it dieing a slow agonizing death. A double lung or heart is much safer and very effective.

Congratulations. Nice shot and good job keeping your mind quiet.

Did you notice if the liver had bullet damage? Were the organs behind the diaphragm all messed up? Funny how a bullet can 'disappear' inside an animal.

Now how will you deal with the carcass? Can you skin and hang it in a cool place for a few days before butchering it?

I butchered my first deer earlier this week under the guidance of my mentor and found the task to be fairly straightforward. Hung it for a few days then cut, wrap and freeze.

The only organ that I noticed with damage was the heart. The top half of the heart was blown apart though. The liver might have had damage but I'm not sure. I know the bullet didn't exit and didn't hit the lungs. The deer is at the processor I'll have it next week.

Good job and good story LS1, sounds like you are hooked. Now you need to learn how to cut the deer up yourself, you will see the proof is in the pudding as they say. What I mean is you will be eating the deer that you killed and took great care of, not someone else's that been riding around in the back of a truck all day getting hot....Again good job!

Glad to see your success, I have known men that have "HUNTED" for well over 30 yrs and never even laid eyes on a deer. Back in the late 80's a young man that worked for me went on his first ever deer hunt. He was let out of pickup to man his stand while the dogs ran the herd in the direction of standers. He said the PU was not even out of sight when a 8 point walked into the middle of road watching the truck drive away. He dropped it in its tracks with a single shot. Talk about beginners luck, but guess as long as he got it legal that's all that matters.

First off, congrats on the deer. It was years after I started hunting before I actually got one, and that wasn't from lack of want/trying. Once the bug has taken hold of you, you're ruined. Welcome to the club. :D

I think you are wise to avoid head shots. While the quote above is a true statement, tennis balls don't have the potential for moving just before you shoot. There's a sizable area on a deer (just behind the shoulder) which will result in a quick death if you put a bullet through it. Aim there.

Good luck in the future and enjoy your venison. Lots of great recipes out there.

With the way the heart was mangled up on the deer I shot there is no reason for me to do anything besides aim for the vitals. That doe went no more than 30 yards. I can't ask for better results especially when it was my first ever shot at one. THANK YOU all for the kind words and all the help I've gotten from you guys.

Well done, that is awesome news. Hope you got initiated :D.

Curiously, what was the meat damage like at the entrance wound, was there lots of bruising etc.

My hunting partner of the last decade called me "old dead eye" when telling his significant other who shot the deer we got this Sunday. I imagine it is because I just don't miss. I'm sure than one of the reasons I just don't miss, is because I aim for the boiler room.

Andrew I didn't see any muscle bruising. The entrance wound I couldn't stick my pinky in it. The only organ I saw with any damage was the heart. The bullet didn't exit I never saw a drop of blood either. I wish I found the bullet but I'm guessing it was in the gut pile somewhere. It was a hand loaded Nosler Accubond going 3019fps at the muzzle shot was ~60 yards. Do you guys think the bullet seperated?

Congratulations. I picked this up off of the What rifle/cartridge combination for deer this year thread on the rifle page. I would have started that thread over here but have somehow never seen this part of the board.

That is strange you did not find an entry wound and no bullet. I have however seen that happen before. You are probably right that it was buried in the guts somewhere. Bullets can do strange things.

I am impressed you waited that long. I cannot handle it for more that a couple of minutes. I got out last Sunday thirty seconds after shooting an 8 point only to have him try to get up as I walked up to him. I had shot a little high but fortunately the 30-06 had hit his spine and he could not control himself. Shot him with a pistol that was in the truck.

Now that it is in your blood, it is over for you. Just so you know.

There wasn't much left of the heart for me to eat...I wouldn't have ate it anyways. I did get some war paint on my face. :) I didn't notice bruising at the entrance but I didn't really look either. All I saw was a hole that I couldn't fit my pinky in so I'm guessing the bullet didn't explode on impact.

The more I think about it my guess is the bullet is in the spine somewhere or in the rear pelvic bone. All I know for certain is the bullet mangled the heart up and I'll have meat in my freezer. I can't complain about that.

Now all I'm thinking about is when I'll get to hunt again...lol
