"It happens"

"It happens"? Well, I must be doing something wrong then. I've loaded and unloaded firearms since I was ten years old, and it hasn't "happened" to me yet. What am I doing wrong?

"...adding that she was following safety precautions as she unloaded her Ruger 380 semi-automatic handgun."

No, no she obviously was not....

I'm going to put my money on finger on the trigger while attempting to rack the slide.

"I'm a gun owner. It happens," she said Wednesday, adding that she was following safety precautions as she unloaded her Ruger 380 semi-automatic handgun. No one was injured.

In denial.....claiming she was following manufacturers safety precautions...won't admit she was the nut behind the wheel.

Kentucky State Police Sgt. Jason Palmer, who heads the legislative security unit, said Combs accidentally fired the gun once about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.....He said the incident was reported to the state police at 4:25 p.m.

Took over two hours for state police to hear about it?....sounds like she wanted to cover up her actions and realized that would be worse than the incident itself.

She almost shot herself in the foot when the gun went off, and she really shot herself in the foot with her comment. Be it denial or arrogence, making the comment "It happens." tells you more about the person than anything else.

Here's a follow up question: Should her CWP be revoked?

Yep, she caused it to happen by careless handling. An LCP has an extremely long trigger pull that is also heavy. She was probably running her mouth while attempting to unload it and certainly not paying attention to what she was doing.

It wouldn't surprise me to learn this whole matter was orchestrated to bring back the No Firearms rule in the Capital.

It just went off by itself of course. Happens all the time. It's happened to me twice today.

All I know is that really sucks for our side when ever ANYONE has a firearms accident, let alone one that is publicized.

"IT" doesn't happen, "YOU" being irresponsible happens. YOU have 100% of the responsibility for YOUR gun safety and YOUR firearms. Help us keep it that way!!!

She's a D, House leadership is D. Nothing will be done to her, but it might raise the drum beat to ban carry in state buildings again. Not a good result.

Ruger should sue her for defamation.

Marzian said, "I'm certainly not wanting to take guns away from people, but maybe keep them in our cars if people have them to not bring them around to where there are going to be children walking up around the halls."

Well, being as it was one of your esteemed colleagues who did this, Mrs. Marzian, not an ordinary citizen touring the capitol, perhaps it would be prudent to consider removing the problem rather than infringing on everyone elses rights.

In other words, terminate her. Would almost certainly be the result of an ND at work for any other person working in the private sector.

She is right about one thing "It DOES happen" when you are foolish and negligent with your firearm. So many things done wrong I don't have the time or energy to address them. She should be treated like any normal person would and have her carry license revoked if it falls under such an offense. Like the saying goes, "you can't fix stupid."

Give me a break, following gun safety precautions, and it happens? I've been carrying for many years, and I have never had one discharge while loading or unloading, it should never happen if one is following all safety protocol. She clearly had her finger on the trigger. I can almost visualize her fumbling with it while her finger was gripping that trigger, BANG! So ya, it happens if you are poorly trained.

This proves that the redundancy of the four rules works. She dropped the mag, but didn't check the chamber. She might have been talking and was distracted or simply forgot. At least she pointed the gun (hopefully) in a safe direction. What I don't buy is explanation of why she took it out of her purse while there was another person present. That doesn't make sense if she just didn't want to carry it anymore "because I didn't like it"

When will people learn that there are only three times you should handle a carry gun: when putting it on when you go out, when taking it off when you come home, and when you actually intend to use it to protect yourself. None of the accidents I've ever read about included "the gun went off while in its holster untouched."

"I'm certainly not wanting to take guns away from people, but maybe keep them in our cars if people have them to not bring them around to where there are going to be children walking up around the halls."

Just a few flaws here...

I'm with Duff on this one!
I'm going to put my money on finger on the trigger while attempting to rack the slide.

Around here she would have been charged with a reckless discharge within city limits. A felony.

Maybe not though now that I think about it. She may be more elite than us average joes.

Today my Yugo SKS went off at the river!
All thirty rounds, but nothing happened until the finger went into the trigger guard.

mboe794: But would a person in the "correct party" be charged with even a serious misdemeanor for that, In The Twin Cities?
Coworkers very often called the local leftist rag "The Hammer and Sickle", instead of The Star Tribune.

Why pull the trigger at all? If she was unloading it with a colleague there, I would assume she was trying to show it to him, what's the point in pulling the trigger? The LCP doesn't require a trigger pull for anything, just drop the mag, rack the slide. Even if she was trying to disassemble for cleaning, you don't need to pull the trigger. Just push down the pin cover, pull the slide back a tiny bit, turn it on it's side, and the pin drops out, and the slide comes off. No need to pull the trigger.

Seems like a lot of people pull the trigger as a way to "make sure" it's unloaded.

I noticed that timeframe too. Typical politicians. They probably had to write a press release and make up a story before reporting it to police.

They at the very least should charge her with weapon discharge within city limits.

As stupid as it sounds, that is true. I see it at least once every trip to the range. They usually are pointing downrange, but not always. But since that is what they do on the range, they probably do it away from the range where there is no "downrange".

You do what you train yourself to do.
