I sent some emails to my elected officials - Boxer, Feinstein, Schiff, and Bush - on my views about the budget and illegal immigration. Hey, I don't need to like them - just try if I can to do my epsilon in pushing them in the right direction. Here is the peculiar answer I got from Boxer's office:

Dear Friend:

Thank you for your e-mail message and for your interest in public
policy.

In order to better serve the 36 million residents of California, I am
now using an e-mail system located on my Senate website. This system
enables me to provide more and better responses to you and other constituents while saving taxpayer dollars. (Unfortunately, limited resources do not allow me to respond to e-mails generated by third-party organizations.)

If you would like a reply to your message, I encourage you to visit my
website e-mail system at http://boxer.senate.gov/contact/webform.cfm
Simply fill in the fields, type in your message, and click “Submit” at
the bottom of the page.

Again, thank you for contacting me. I hope you will keep in touch.

Sincerely,

Barbara Boxer
United States Senator

How full of narcissistic pink elitist stuffing do you need to be to assume everyone that writes you is "a friend" that would like to "keep in touch" with you, while you also tell them that you ignore their letter unless they do it your way?

We really need new smilies - one that vomits, smiles, and weeps simultaneously.

Cannoneer, I got the same "generic" response as you, so I went to her web page and re-typed the entire message....and got back the SAME response!

My U.S. Congresswoman is Jane Harman, and she sends out a really shabby "newsletter" to her constituents every couple of years. It always says what a fantastic job she has been doing, and how tough a job it is.

By the way, Congresswoman Harman held a "Town Hall Meeting" regarding guns, about 3 years ago. The only problem was that the meeting wasn't advertised or posted anywhere! The only way I found out that it had taken place was on the "City" cable channel.
That Town Hall Meeting was PACKED! Harman fielded several questions from the "constituents". Every "constituent", however, kissed Harman's rear-side, and ALL of them were anti-gun! I almost threw up!

I e-mailed Harman, and asked to be placed on any mailing list for up-coming Town Hall Meetings. The response that I got was totally "generic", and thanked me for supporting her! I fired off another e-mail to her, saying that I had NOT voted for her, DIDN'T support her, and only wished to attend her next Town Hall Meeting so that at least ONE "consituent" wouldn't be on her payroll! The response I got? "Thank you for supporting Representative Harman.....BLAH BLAH BLAH!"

Those with whom you are in more agreement politically and for whom you have no negative bias probably have responses that contain similar amenities. Boxer's response is pretty stiff but not suprising to me.

I have always assumed that the principal will never take the time to read my input unless a staffer believes it warrants attention. At best, it might be treated as polling input. I would assume you were effectively writing to a young hot tub communist, and that they will react accordingly.

I haven't written to my US Senators, but when I wrote to my US Rep. (Todd Akin, MO), I did get a real reply, although it was likely done by a staffer (it was on the topic of digital rights management, and the honorable Rep. and I disagree on that one).

I have gotten excellent responses from my state representative; I sent him a couple emails about furthering the cause of obedience to the 2nd Amendment, and both times received a personal reply (once I sent the email at 10:30pm, he replied within a half hour). Rep. Carl Bearden and I agree on a great many things.

Use all three forms available to you. Call, fax, and email. I'm involved in some Union activites and have done alot of communicating with congress. Think out what you intend to say. Make sure to spell and grammar check. Write yourself a script (talking points) for your phone calls. Make sure to mention you are a registered voter (you are, aren't you?) and will be sharing your opinions on Senator/Rep. so-and-so with everyone you know.

Real, you're 99.9% correct. Some have the staffers pull every 100th letter. Then again, how do you decide what's in the 100th letter, the staffer reads it first.
This is how it was done. After reading the letters, the staffer send an approved specific generic letter. After that, a tally sheet on the important issues was updated either for or against.

The root of the problem began with two events. First was the income tax which allowed the beast to grow. The other was when Congress abdicated its responsibility to make laws to the faceless unelected bureaucrats. This allowed the congresscritters to "come to the aid of the voters" with the bureaucrat and save the day. Thus insuring reelection

Um....dude.....relax.

It's called being polite and professional, at least as polite & professional as people of boxer's ilk are capable of being.

Would you feel better if her staff addressed responses to you as a "drooling, uneducated, toothless, rednecked, small-genitalia, anti-government whacko, right-wing conspiracy nutjob"?

:D

Hey....maybe you have cooties now too since she called you her friend!!

It also helps to mention if you are a constituent, and if you voted in the last election.

I did and am and did.

Interestingly, this is what I got from Representative Schiff, with my bolding:

Dear Dr. (name withheld):

Thank you for contacting me regarding illegal immigration. I
appreciate hearing from you and welcome your input.

As a former federal prosecutor, I believe we have an obligation to
enforce existing immigration laws, and that our current system is badly in
need of reform.
I have been working to ensure that the Border Patrol
and the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (BCIS) are
adequately funded to reduce the number of illegal immigrants while ensuring
legal immigrants are treated fairly. It is also imperative that we
develop a system that can provide thorough background checks on visa
applicants
. This is especially important in light of the September 11
attacks and the ongoing threat of domestic terrorist attacks.

In light of the events of September 11th and the ongoing threat of
domestic terrorist attacks, it is especially important that we develop a
system to secure our borders. I strongly supported the Enhanced Border
Security and Visa Entry Reform Act
, already enacted into law, which
strengthened border security and provides substantial resources and
authority to help the BCIS combat illegal immigration and terrorism.

In addition, I supported legislation to implement the recommendations
of the 9/11 Commission which included enhancements in border security,
including an increase in the Border Patrol of at least 1,000 agents per
year for each of the next five years and an increase in the number of
full-time active duty personnel to investigate violations of immigration
laws.
The legislation also limits the use of foreign nationals for
visa screening, requires training in detecting fraudulent documents for
consular offices, and requires more in-person interviews for individuals
applying for nonimmigrant visas.

I am also working to ensure that the federal government adequately
compensates California for the costs associated with incarcerating illegal
aliens. In Congress, I have strongly supported efforts to restore
funds, which the Administration cut, vital to California's handling of
incarcerated illegal immigrants. As a member of the House Judiciary
Committee, please be assured that I will keep your views in mind as I review
immigration-related legislation.

An on-going job of a Representative in Congress is to help constituents
solve problems with federal agencies, access services, or get questions
answered fairly and promptly. For this reason, I have designed a
"Guide to Constituent Services" which details some of the help my office can
provide to you as a constituent. Please know that you can always reach
me at (626) 304-2727 or via the website at www.house.gov/schiff which
includes an electronic version of the guide.

Again, thank you for your input. If I can be of any assistance, please
do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Adam B. Schiff
Member of Congress

P.S. To receive updates on issues and events important to you, please
visit my website at www.house.gov/schiff and sign up for my Washington
Update e-mail newsletter.

Frankly, I am pleasantly surprised.
