It looks like there's a .358Win in my future.

Stormys are classic indeed. But I have a soft spot for Jones hats. Reminds me of testing my dad’s patience following him through the woods as a young fella not old enough to hunt, but fascinated by him and the outdoors he loved so much. View attachment 1167487
Oh oh...here we go with hats again. First it was the Tilley, then challenged by the Boonie, with the Sombrero getting into the act. Now the Stomry! Who will win? :) :)

Wearing a Jones hat requires that you carry an old lever action, Remington pump action, or old autoloader like a Winchester 100, or Remington 740!

Trying to get back on track 👍

I’m a 358 Win fan.

I had JES rebore a 30-06 Savage take off barrel to 35 Whelen a few years ago. Got a 3 grove 14 twist. It shoots great. You won’t hear a word from him until he ships it out. Your rifle build sounds great. Keeping my eyes open for a Remington model 7 to get rebored to .358 Win.

Picked up the 7600 yesterday, so here's some "before" pictures:

Standard 7600 that's been hunted and shows some wear. Interestingly, the shop sent it in the hard case pictured which weighs a ton and must have cost a pretty penny to ship. The barrel will be headed to Jess before the end of the week.
Gun looks great! Are you going to run a box of 243 through it before you rebore the barrel?

No, no real sense in doing it. Even IF it should shoot awesome, it's still going to end up a .358. I'll save the .243 components for my 6mmSLR.

I will have my smith check the headspace tomorrow just to ensure all's well before the barrel heads west.

Sorry if this is off topic but what is 6mmSLR?

Kind of a 6mm Creedmoor +P :)

Based on the .243Win with the shoulder pushed back and the neck lengthened. Just shy of 3200 FPS with a 105 Hybrid.

Interesting!!

Interesting!!

It works well. In my 26" Bartlein barrel with converted Win Brass it's easily sub 1/2 MOA with H4831. I can speed things up a little more, but the accuracy with the current load is very, very good.

Back on subject..

Pulled the barrel for shipment and checked headspace. Definitely one of those carried often, shot little deals. Bolt face is still blued, no signs of firing. The bolt lugs are also like new with little finish wear.

Closes on a "GO", but won't close completely on a .001" over. By Friday the barrel and bolt are heading west. Also, now have one of these on order:

I'm surprised to see a big recoil pad on a rifle chambered in .243 and wonder if it's a factory pad. Either way, you'll be glad it's there when you start shooting it with .358 Winchester ammunition. The recoil is "stiff" on my Savage Model 99 rifle, chambered in .358 but I never feel it when shooting game. I hunt whitetails in Michigan cedar swamps with a fifties vintage Remington Model 760, chambered in .30-06 Springfield and with the Savage "Brush Gun", both having Williams "FoolProof" micrometer sights, and have never seen a difference in "killing/stopping" power between the two cartridges. A factory pad came with the Savage but the Remington never had one nor did I ever miss having one on it.
