I'm trying to decide between a new Italian-made Beretta 92FS and a U.S. made M9 version. The 92FS is $30 cheaper. I know the differences between the 92FS and M9 (slanted dustcover, radiused backstrap, sights) but am not really sure whether these differences make one better than the other. Do those changes alter the shooting experience in any way? Would one be considered more desireable? Thanks

Me, I'd go w/ the Italian version every time!

Abosultely 100% agree!

Everything I've read (which is A LOT regarding Beretta) and experienced personally with Beretta is anything made in Italy is better quality.

I'm about to get flamed:

Buy American the job you save might be your own.

I'm mean that seriously American manufacturing jobs are expected to be cut by 50% by 2016. I'd say any thing we can do to keep the jobs here will ultimately be better for our economy.

The problem isn't folks not buying American (both our SUV's are Dodge BTW), but the corporate tax rate!

The UK has the highest corporate tax rate in the world. Their economy is totally in the tank. Wanna guess who has the second highest corporate tax rate in the world? The U.S.! Follow the $$$!

There are very few bussineses that the US government can stop from going off shore. It's corporate taxes that's killing US produced goods. They pass the tax on to the consumer. There are very few instances where government has legislated & refused to let a business pass along a tax.

We need to get government OFF the backs of business. Business makes $$, they expand, they hire more folks.

How dare a businessman/woman make money and hire more people! A certain politcal party would have you believe that it's evil to have/make money. They forget about the expansion and new employeees that benifet everytime business is good!

That's why services, medical, etc. are the hot job ticket today in the US. They can't send it overseas!

That certain political party thinks that it's better that they control the business's money...and your $$. Call it the "New Deal" or "The Great Society"; it's all about taxes and people control. Control the $$...you can control the people.

IF, I say IF they get the white house, and (this is very important) a philibuster proof majority in the house, we are a done deal.

Vote my brothers and sisters, it's our only chance to get us back on the path to complete stability. Hand them the defeat they deserve, and this time, we demand fiscal responsibility from the folks we vote in. No more 'tax & spend". Get the corporate tax rate reduced..and see the jobs come home.

Rant over. Polite and reasonable debate or decension invited.

So buying the M9 version because it's closest to what the troops use is not really a plus to most Beretta owners?

My opinion is buy the american M9, but buy the italian magazines. The good mags, the ones with the aluminum base plates. They cost more but are worth it.

Being one of those troops carrying the M9, I wouldn't consider it a strong selling point . . .

This is what confuses me. Some people tout the M9 version as better because its milspec, but the three differences seem to make the 92FS better. The radiused backstrap reduces the large grip, the slanted dustcover was designed to make the frame stronger, and 3 dot sights are better than dot and post. Does the military version not include these changes because the military just wants a less expensive gun?

I like the 92FS because it has newer updates... the radiused backstrap, angled dust cover and the 3 dot sights, and it's cheaper to buy.
I thought about getting the M9, but I decided my 92FS is the same thing, just different name.

Ultramag44....VERY WELL SAID!

I have a 92FS that is made in the USA and it's exceptional in every way. My son has an M9. Being a Marine I figured an M9 would be the best thing for him to spend the most time with because he may have to rely on one one of these days. They are both excellent pistols and one is not better or worse than the other and the differences are so minor as to be of no effect....a little different pattern on the sights (mine is a three dot, his is like a bar and a dot IIRC), mine has a steel guide rod, his is plastic, mine is marked 92FS and his M9. That's about it. I previously posted mine was Italian but I just went and looked to be certain and I was wrong. It matters not to me. I plan on buying a couple more just like the one I have and US made is just fine with me. Some folks thing a Beretta has to be made in Italy, a BHP in Belgium and a 1911 has to be a Colt. Most of that is called gun-snobbery. My Beretta is US made, I've had BHP's made in Belgium, Portugal and made in Portugal/assembled in the US and I've had Colt 1911's (as well as several other Colts) and I've had 1911's that were not made by Colt. In the latter case, the Colt 1911's have honestly been the least reliable. Never had a problem with any High Power no matter where it was made and my USA Beretta and sons M9 are just perfect. You just can't please everyone.

Are you sure?????????

rob45: ...I've had BHP's made in Belgium, Portugal and made in Portugal/assembled in the US...

:confused:I've never heard of a Browning Hi Power that was "Made in Portugal/assembled in the US".

You know what...now that you mention it, I believe it said "made it Belgium/assembled in Portugal". I had several BHP's in the past but it's been over 15 years and I've been mostly stuck in the 1911 rut.

Ok........ I'm not going to get in to this any deeper then I have to. To start off with I have not found any significant differences between a Beretta 92fs mad in the USA or in Italy. I have gone and done my research prior to buying my own 92fs. I have also verified the plastic count on the Beretta 92fs at 5 plastic pieces the recoil sprig guid, tirgger, mag relese, Safety and the hammer spring cap. Now this is on a new INOX Beretta 92fs. I'm not to sure if it’s any different on the M9 but ether way it’s one of the best platforms to ever to shoot a 9mm. Just do some homework and go check out some shops the have both and verify it for your self. IMO plastic or metal its still a better shoot then most pistols will ever come close to!!

You can check out this topic that has some info about the 92fs

Those same plastic/polymer pieces you mentioned on the US made 92FS are all metal on my Italian made one. Which is why it took me over a year to find the Italian one I wanted in stainless. Good luck!

I’m no expert but from what I found on the Italian made 92fs did not seem any different from the US model. Now with that being said the gun at the shop I saw could have been a fake Italian made 92fs meaning the slide was not original. The pistol was a consignment item that was in good condition with all the paper work but I can’t say 100% it was an Italian made 92fs. On wikipedia.org I found some info regarding the Inox Models 92fs but take this with a Grain of salt it’s Wikipedia!

Inox Models
The Inox models (from the Italian "inoxidable" meaning non-oxidizing) feature the following parts made in stainless steel: the barrel, the slide (including the extractor, the safety and the right-side manual safety lever), the trigger (and trigger pin), and slide stop lever.

In my opinion, the discrepancy in quality was largely when the US plant first went into production.

This was over a decade ago, but the Italion made Beretta's commanded a bigger price difference than $30. Having seen them in person, if you couldn't visually see the difference (which I could), the feel in action was not the same.

For new Beretta's, I don't think there really is a diffence anymore. I have a couple of US made Beretta Elite models that are great.

Aside from the M9, when comparing 92s: People selling you an American-made 92 will say there is no difference. Those selling you an Italian-made 92 will tell you there are slight but very important differences. I did my research and ended up looking around for an Italian model. I found one brand new at a local shop for $499 out-the-door. I'm in love with this pistol. I think for me it was just the allure of an "exotic" Italian-made Beretta over a USA model that made up my mind. There may not be any difference on the surface (other than the slide markings) but Italian models have always had some unexplainable "something" when held next to a USA model. It's probably just my imagination.
