I've seen an old Ithaca 37 for sale for less than a new Maverick 88. Its supposed to be in good working order but has some cosmetic blemishes - can I go wrong with this?

Surface wear is typical of ex-police shotguns. Most are in good shape mechanically. Sounds as if the price is right- I'd say buy it.

If there were one like that here in Tidewater, VA, my hand would move to my wallet so fast, you could hear my fingers fly through the air.

A few hours too late :(
At $200 it wasn't going to last long. Thanks for the info, though!

I have both an ithaca DS Police and a maverick 88. I love the maverick! IMOO its the best sub $200 shotgun out there...but an ithaca it aint;)

It's so obvious it's almost laughable. I'd pick (and have picked) an Ithaca 37 that was encrusted in rust before I'd buy a new Maverick 88. That said, the Maverick 88 is a decent firearm that should give you years of happy service! I actually prefer the Maverick to the Mossberg due to the safety... I don't like a tang safety.

It wasn't so much a straight choice between the two, but a fine gun at a too-good-to-be-true price :scrutiny: it's okay, though - win some, lose some.
