Ithaca 37 questions

George,

I think we have found similar firearms. I picked mine up for $200US at an antique auction. It is also a 30" and a -4 full choke. I took it out this weekend for the first time just shooting some random hand thrown things and I had a real hard time hitting them. The main reason was definitely inexperience, but the second reason might be the distance at which they were from me, maybe only 10-15 yards. I figure with the full choke, something out a bit further will be easier to hit with a little spread. I have been trying to buy clays locally and there are non to be found in Central FL. I ordered a case last week and I look forward to them coming in.

There's some nice looking guns on here. I found mine at the Ft. Worth gun show last year for $225. It's a 20 gauge with 26" vent rib barrel and came with Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder Lyman Chokes. Sure makes a nice all-around lightweight gun. It was manufactured in 1969.

Well. I had to pile on.

What a super job on dating all these wonderful shotguns. Mine is an Ithaca Model 37 DS Police Special, SN 1012XXX, If possible, I would like a date of manufacture. Thank you, Bill

Zbill,
I would like to see pics of your Ithaca Model 37 DS Police Special also.

Black_Talon,
Do you know approx. how many m37 were produced over the years? I assume 12ga was the most popular?

George

Pics of the DS Police Special M37

Black Talon and other - thanks for the input. This is not marked LE other than on the barrel. But it did come from the son of a LEO. I doubt if it was an issue weapon or even LEO, but were these available to the general public? How about the stock? I assume it is a replacement. Any input on the stock? Due to large pics, more on next post. Thanks Bill

Yes, the buttstock is certainly a replacement, and of course the recoil pad is aftermarket as well. Cracked buttstocks on M37's are pretty common, that could be the reason for the replacement.

Has the metal been refinished? It looks in very good condition, compared to the typical wear that's showing on the forend wood.

Thanks for the pics!

BTW, your gun has the relatively uncommon fixed (or "LAPD") style rear sight on it.

If I had to select refinished metal or not by the sharpness of the engraving and stamps I would guess original. It appears parkerized, but it is not a parked finish that I know. I would appreciate any more available info on the LAPD rear sight. Bill

Must've been this thread that pushed me off the bubble.

A 37 materialized at my dealer - didn't know they came "870TB pretty" which is to say "nice wood with impressed checkering". It still had the forestock sticker proclaiming "Walnut".

Anybody know if the grip cap was OEM?

Looking for scope rings for my Model 37

I traded for a 1975 vintage Deerslayer with the elevation adjustable iron sights. The rear sight appears to have bases for scope rings cut into it, but the width seems odd. They seem more narrow than standard scope rings. any advise that can be offered is appreciated. I am hoping to stay away from a B-Square style mount.

Thanks for all your efforts in this thread. This is my first M37 and without doubt the prettiest I've ever seen apart from the engraved examples.

Possibly not all that practical - fixed full choke 20Ga - not sure what one uses that for, but I'm ready to learn.

1978. (happens to be the first year for the Sid Bell gripcap too, IIRC)

Oh, and you realize that the "ULT" prefix indicates that it's one of the Ultralights, right? Schweeet guns. '78 was the first year for them too. Aluminum receiver and trigger plate to save weight. I believe Ithaca advertised them at 5.5lbs.

I can believe that - my RCBS fishscale... unh ... trigger gauge is actually showing a skosh under 5 pounds. Whether it's my ratty trigger gauge or the fact that my ULT is 20Ga, I will defer to those more knowledgable than myself.

One thing fercryinoutloud certain - it sure feels like it isn't even there compared to the O/U or the 870TB.

Another fercertain observation is the fact that I don't believe in safe queens - whoever had it before me evidently did - no real wear on the action bar, original store stickers on the stock. I've removed the sticker and this babe is going to have wear marks soon - it's just too nice not to shoot.

:D

Hi i have a mod. 37 from my grandfather that has ser number 206590 could you tell me how old this is i think it is somtime in the 1940s thanks

Another m37 to date...

Hi Black_Talon,

My friend just pulled out his Father's m37 serial 576249. He's curious about it's age. Thanks in advance for your time.

Regards,

George

PS: I put a few shells through my newly aquired m37. Nice pattern at 30yrds with the full choke & #6 shot. Can't wait for Spring turkey coming soon!
