ithaca 37

Hi BlackTalon,
Have a mdl 37 "Riot" SN 371562XXX. Not marked police or anything like that. Has the 20" barrel, full length 7rd mag tube, parkerized finish, satin wood with checkering, plain receiver (no engraving) and flip up rifle sights. Barrel is marked Featherweight and Cyl. Can you tell me when it was made and any other info on it???

Thanks.

Your gun was made in 1976. M37's never came with "flip up" sights. The correct barrel for a non-engraved" receiver would be one with the plain M&P brass bead on it. Just a day or two ago, I saw one for sale (on Gunbroker, IIRC) that sounds exactly like yours. It had an aftermarket ramp front sight and a Williams-type folding rear sight on it.

While I'm at it, I'll answer your PM questions here too:

The barrel if a 20" model with iron flip up sights and is marked cylinder bore. After I gave the barrel a good scrubbing with bore cleaner and a brass brush I shined a light down it and noticed that the last 2-3 inches towards the muzzle have what look to be some rough machining marks (not "rough" that you can feel, but you can see the cylindrical maching marks compared to the mirror finish of the rest of the bore). Is this perhaps where they machined the barrel to the "cyl" choke at the factory?? I did notice that the rest of the bore also has similar machine looking markings, but they appear much lighter.

"Cyl" bore is just that, a straight tube that is the same diameter all the way from the end of the forcing cone to the muzzle. There shouldn't be any marking on it at all. Is the bbl marked "Cyl"on the left side right ahead of the receiver?

I've not seen a shotgun barrel before with these type of markings and was curious if this was somehow a result of the "roto forging"??

No, the Roto-forged bbls are very smooth inside.

The bore does have some minor scratching, but not bad for a 30+yr old gun, and not pitting or rust. One other odd thing I noticed though is about 5-6 inches from the muzzle you can see a small (maybe 1/4") imperfection in the mirror finish. Its hard to describe, but it almost looks like a very slightly raised pock mark. I ran a cleaning rod over it and you can ever so lightly feel it with the rod as it passes over the area. There is no dent or bulge in the barrel, so I wonder if this again was just a defect during machining??

Sure sounds like a dent to me. The way these bbls are made, there's no way to end up with any sort of "bubble" in the wall.

Finally, are the newer barrels marked 2-3/4" or 3" interchangeable with my gun?? I know my gun is 2-3/4" only, but I have to be honest and say I don't know if that is determined by the barrel or the receiver? I came across a ported turkey barrel that I would like to install if it will fit?

Yes, any of the post 855,000 bbls marked 2-3/4" or 3" will fit your gun, but you can not shoot 3" shells as your gun will not feed/eject them correctly. One caveat though. You say you have a 7-shot gun, which means that your bbl lug will be positioned right up near the muzzle of the barrel. Standard M37 4-shot bbls will not fit on your gun because the bbl lug will be in the wrong place. If your gun is a 7 shot, you can only use other 7 shot bbls as replacements, which seriously limits your selection, as the vast majority on them will be LE 20" bbls.

S/N ULT-371668033

Thanks for all your efforts in this thread. This is my first M37 and without doubt the prettiest I've ever seen apart from the engraved examples.

Possibly not all that practical - fixed full choke 20Ga - not sure what one uses that for, but I'm ready to learn.

Got one ULT3717x in 12ga pad and Sid Bell cap. One of my preferred uplands along with a Winchester Model 59 and a Franchi 48/AL 20ga.

Ithaca M-37 Shells Sticking

I have 2 M-37s (1 feather light from the 1950's) and a M&P from 2000 with a plain 20" barrel. I have been having problems with shells sticking in the chamber when the gun gets hot. First time it happened I sent it back to the factory and they replaced the extractor springs. It still does it but not as often. I have now noticed the same thing is occurring on the one I have from the 50's. (I sometimes take it out to the desert and shoot alot of trap).

Has anyone else had this problem? Do you think polising the chamber with a Flex-Hone will help? Or should I send this one back to the factory too.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

trigger weight???

Does anyone know what the standard trigger weight(pull) on an M37? Mine seems to be around 11lbs. Is there a way to adjust this. Most of my other guns have a trigger weight around 4lbs.

Hi. First timer here. Very interesting stuff! I do have a question. I have a model 37 with the numbers 371418XXX. Could you please tell me the year this was made and also can I get interchangable barrels for this. Thanks!

Thanks Black Talon,

I guess I should do a little cleaning on this gun. I have had it in the safe for a bit just didn't think much of it. I figgured it wasn't much, so there it sat along side my first shot gun I bought 20 years ago (Sears JC Higgins)

LOL you will have to pish me outta the way when he want me to help out again.

It was looking for information on Ithaca shotguns that led me to this website. This shotgun section rocks! Had to join.:)
Just received a new to me model37 this afternoon. It has a 20" barrel. Is that rare in a non police model? Its # is 1691xx.

Can anyone fill me in on the date of manufacture and any info on the configuration? The good news is I have another one on the way that I'm going to use for trap.

Quick 'edit' question: what is the cross pin on the magazine nut supposed to do?

Cheers

Another question for the well informed on here:D Picked up a Ithaca 37 20ga Featherlight with the serial number: 77232*

What's the date of manufacture for this one and what numbered barrels can I use on it? Thanks

It was made in 1959.

The only barrel you can use on it is one numbered 77232*. Any other barrel would have to be fitted by a gunsmith. The barrels on the pre-855,000 guns were not interchangeable without professional fitting.

I'll include an earlier post if anyone can help...

Now I've received a second one . It is also a 12ga model37, this time with a 30" barrel. It's # is 759116x-x and does not have the cross pin in the magazine nut.

Any help would be appreciated and it is really tempting to start collecting these.

Cheers
