my better half has an old ithica single shot 22 rifle, its an m49 . the firing pin is broken. Ive found the parts at numrich arms, now i need some disassembly instructions. I did a search and some of the older posts refered to someone posting instructions but I cant find it. any help will be appreciated.

thanks

I haven't had one of those apart in forever

If you can find a break down, they are not that bad.

All of my books are some where else, and I picture the result of moving a peace that will let you drop the bolt out, but the picture of what to move, is not in my head right now.

If I can in the A M and groggy remember to I will stop and get the book, and see if I can scan them into an email.

Is that the faked-up lever-action looking falling block? I saw one for sale recently, and thought it was cool in an off-the-wall kinda way...

thanks, Big AZ Al, i'd appreciate that!
clipper, thats the one, it is a neat little gun!

You know, I have the equipment to fill and redrill the firing pin hole and rechamber to something like 22 hornet, if it would work. I would think seriously of picking that local gun up if I knew I could pull something like that off...

centerfire ??????????

With a light weight frame, (and having fought then more then I want) a really light wieght ejector. Outside of a project to save what the cat would not drag in, or make a 270 REN or lighter center fire, it sounds nice but me thinks it should passed over!

Shoot, a Hornet isn't much more than a centerfire .22WMR anyway. The case is only enough bigger to be able to take the primer, and the action has plenty of meat.

The best advice on disassembling that gun is DON'T! I wouldn't bother to repair it.

If you choose to disregard that advice, DO NOT try to drive out the breech block pivot pin. It has a groove in it inside into which a plunger fits. If you try to drive it out, you will wedge the plunger and maybe break the frame.

You need to remove the lever first, driving that pin left to right, then try to make sure the plunger comes free. Then the bolt pivot pin can be removed.

Firing pin breakage is very common on those guns, and also breakage of the ejector trip. Another common problem is the ejector missing the cartridge rim due to poor fitting at the factory. (I may be wrong but I seem to recall that those guns were made in Germany, not by Ithaca, which always had a good reputation. Those guns hurt that reputation, no matter where they were made.)

As to converting that gun to something else, the breechblock is cast steel and the pivot pin is steel, but the sturdy-looking frame is a cheap zinc alloy. I wouldn't trust it too far. After a while, the pin will peen the frame and the fun begins.

not take it apart?

I have the book on it, four simple (four me anyway) steps, in piture and written instruction, on the how and what to look out for.

It's out there

Somewhere online I have seen a step-by-step disassembly for this receiver.
You can also find an exploded diagram.

Ithaca 49

I have takedown instructions from an original Ithaca gunsmith's manual as well as better instructions from an old DBI/JBWood book. If you want them, let me know and I'll scan and eamail them to you. Not the toughest gun I've ever taken apart.
