Hello all,
I am pretty sure that when I joined the forums I told myself that I'd buy one handgun this year and that's it. Well, it seems like I am not strong enough to hold out on another gun. So now I am on the market for another gun and I wanted to get yall's opinions and suggestions before I commit to buying. I am looking for a gun that's for concealed carry, in the 450 range, absolutely no more than 500, actually between 400 to 450 is my optimal price range, I prefer to get new gun, but trade ins are okay as long as it's worth it. Meaning that if a trade in is 380 but I have to spend 30 bucks on a new magazine I might as well buy the 450 brand new gun. I was looking at the Sig p250, which I could get for about 450 bucks. The attraction for this gun is that it is small, seems easy to conceal, and has night sights. The problem is that I've read so many mixed reviews on the gun, and the whole thing about the conversion kits is just confusing, I thought it would be cool if I could spend another 300 and get a kit that can convert a compact 9mm to a full sized .40 but I've read a lot of negative things on this whole deal. I'm also looking into springfield XD but only if I can get it at this price range. So please, in the 400 to 450 price range, what other guns would you recommend? Thanks guys

I would look at the Kahr cw9. I had one and traded it for a pricier pm9 and to tell you the truth, I am regretting it so much that I am looking for another cw9. Its thin, easy to conceal, incredibly accurate, runs jam free right from the box.

Couple of things to remember before you decide...

1) If its not always on you, why bother? Get something that you would be comfortable carrying with you all the time.
2) Most self defense engagements occur at basically point blank to seven yards. Night sights are nice to have but really will not buy you much IMHO.
3) Practice practice practice... Get something that you would be comfortable shooting a hundred rounds through in a single session... If not, you will probably not spend as much time on it as you should.

Besides that, good luck and if you think you will stop at two, you are kidding your self... :)

$400-$450 range for CCW eh?

I'd look at...

Ruger SP101 .357 (My all time favorite CCW gun)
Bersa Thunder .380
Makarov
Used Glocks (prob G26 or something similar)
Used M&Pc (9mm, .40, .45)
S&W J-frame (though IMO SP101 is a better choice for the same $, but different strokes, ya know)

Those would be the top choices of the top of my head that fall in your budget.

If you were willing to spend about $50-$100 more I'd say look into...

Walther PPS
SIG 239, 232, 229
Kahr PM series
Walther PPK

I just bought a p250 and I love it! I am happy to answer any questions you have about it. Some people trash talk it because that is what they have heard and they just perpetuate that opinion. The trigger is DAO but is VERY smooth and crisp and isn't as heavy as some people make it sound. As far as the conversion kits go, I am not the biggest fan just because you can pretty much buy a WHOLE new gun for that price. Maybe not the most quality/expensive one...but a separate gun nonetheless.
That being said, it depends on what kind of body style you are. I have an athletic build and wear polo's most of the time so the thickness of the gun really matters to me. On days that I can get away with jeans the 250 is great. But for other days I need the LCP for pocket carry. If you can handle a little larger gun, the 250 is a very nice gun. If your stature doesn't allow for it, I suggest a pocket gun like the Ruger LCP.

thanks for the suggestions so far. This is my next question I since Blinken brought up the issue of CCW. I'm on a limited budget so I wanted to get a gun that I can both carry and go to the range with. How hard is it to conceal a p250 or a gun that size? I am 5'9, 180lbs athletic build and I wear polo shirts a lot. I will wear a IWB holster most of the time at 4 o'clock. Is the p250 easier or harder to conceal compared to say a glock or a springfieldXDm? I thougth for some reason that the compact p250 is smaller than the springfield, I could be wrong though. And I thought that glocks are thicker than the p250.

I forgot to mention that CZ duty is also on my list of guns that I'm interested in. My main concern is its reliability, conceal-ability, and if it will be fun to shoot.

You can get brand new Glocks and XDs for under $500.

For instance, if you want a new Glock, call up Ed's public safety and you can get any Glock 9mm or .40 except for the 34/35 shipped for $475 and that includes a 1 year membership to GSSF.

If you like the XD, you can get the 4" or 3" models in 9mm or .40 for $439 shipped from Bud's gun shop at the moment.

I would consider either one of those to be a better choice than the P250. The glock and xd pistols are here to stay, the resale value is higher and someone actually might want to buy it off of you too (unlike the P250) if you don't end up liking it as much as you thought. The P250 compact isn't a very compact pistol. I'd consider it a midsized. The Glock 19/23/26/27 or the XD sub-compacts are small enough to conceal for most people.

There's already a thread bashing the P250 pretty bad so I won't harp on it. Let's just say it's the redheaded stepchild of the SIG line of pistols. If you really like it though, you can get one for under $450 now (since not many people want them). They really aren't THAT bad but it's entertaining to poke a little fun at them sometimes. Good luck!

Bersa Thunder 9 or .40 are under $400 ... just got a Ultra Compact 9mm for my wife and it shoots great for the money.

btw...I told myself the same thing..."pace yourself, only one new gun a year". I bought two this year and I am seriously trying to get enough scratch together to buy my third. Hopefully I will hold off until next year or I might have to check myself into rehab.

What Voland said! The Kahr CW9 is a great carry gun and it doesn't feel like a brick if you carry it all day long. With a proper holster and belt you won't even know you have it. One of the best guns in the carry market.

Oh, the CW9 can be had right around $400... you can shoot it all day long since it has a full size grip. I am a bit larger then you so glocks and such print really bad when I wear tshrits. The Kahr dont print at all...

The CZ is a good choice as well. Dont limit your self to looking at just one... See if you can find some one that has one or more that you are looking at and ask them to shoot it... Go to a store and fondle each and every one of them... If you are really going to try to stick to one a year, take your time and do your research... :) Trust me, I speak from experience. This is how I ended up with 8 pistols in two years...

buy the CZ at Top Gun Supply, you will NOT be sorry. I have a PCR, which is basically the same thing w/o the rail, and I would get rid of my BHP before I let go of it. The CZ is that good!!

On the other hand, my Kahr P380 needs a brother so my next purchase will be the P/CW9 for daily carry.

thanks for the suggestions guys. Right now I am leaning towards CZ or XD. I do have a question about these though, I see that they both have a pretty large magazine capacity, I was looking at the CZ duty 9mm, I see that Buds have them for 429 which means I can get them for probably cheaper. But how concealable are these guns? I mean compared to the Sig P250, which I am leaning more and more towards not getting, how easily would these conceal in say a IWB holster at the 4'oclock position, I would imagine they are bigger and harder to conceal than the sig right?

Bersa Thunder 9 or .40 are under $400 ... just got a Ultra Compact 9mm

Can you tell me where you found one? The UC 9mm is on my short list for CC but they are very hard to find.
