I stopped a burglar tonight. He entered a Jeep across from my place, and I came upon him.
"hello" I said. "can I help you?"
"no". he said. I insisted again, as I am a good neighbor, but he said "......"

Things were funny, so I walked with him as he walked away from the Jeep."How's it going?" "How are you?'

As we walked down the fire road he was trying to put distance between us. I offered to call for "assistance", and for the next minute or so offered to call the police to help. He said "no".

After a few hundred yards I finally called, and let the lady know that something wasn't right. He became to become agitated, and we ended walking a good 8-10 blocks with me about 30 feet behind describing the scenario to the lady on the end of the phone. (who by the way was far more interested in me than the situation, which, to me was incomprehensible)

So we walked and he threw a hammer and saw at me as I kept jabbering on to the lady, trying to give her our exact location, street by street, alley by alley, east, then twenty feet in the other direction as he tried to rush me. He became to get mad and would walk away and then pick up the hammer and let me know that I wasn't to mess with him. Anyways, meanwhile, on the phone I kept vocal as to our contining whereabouts to the lady.

After, six or so minutes, after the hammer was thrown a couple of times along with the saw and pliers. The cops came along. A lot of them. When they eventually came there were about four cars. The lieutenant was decent, let's leave it at that. Three or four ended up talking to the guy.

The two others, besides the Lieutenant, were less than impressive. (one in particular wouldn't introduce himself with a handshake), because "he didn't" because of "germs". At that point he was dismissed by me as...well, all I can say was that he was dismissed. We then walked the 4-5 blocks back to the Jeep. ect. ect 30 minutes more...

My good deed for the day. Watching the neighborhood on a rainy night.

have a great day,

ps to keep this gun related. I was thinking about if I had my .45 I think that all in all I am glad I didn't have to reach for it, but the thought did occur. Just some guy.

The germ cop was talking about MAC-15's, and how when the folks on Broad Street (Street in front of my place) shouldn't be asked to turn down their music when they are cranking it because they have MAC-15's. Sorry. Whatever, pal.

Just to clarify a few things: What did he break into? The Jeep? Or was it HIS Jeep? You sure walked a LONG way with him....and it sounds like you were in a somewhat remote area at one point!
What if he had "connected" with that hammer? After he had thrown the hammer at you, why didn't you "arm" yourself with it? After all, the hammer was evidence, since he had assaulted you with it!

At least you were "armed" with your cell phone!

Next time you see something similar in your neighborhood, it might be best if you kept the suspect under surveillance from a safe distance while calling the police. If the suspect isn't aware that you're tracking him, you won't end up with a hammer in the cranium....or maybe a bullet!

Oldtimer,

He was breaking into the Jeep which at one point was only 10 feet from where I was initially. After I "knew" that he was not on the up and up, I grabbed my phone from my pocket and gave the boys in Blue a call.

We ended up quite a ways away from where we started out because as I walked him down it seemed like an interminable amount of time before they came. Which seemed to me a long time as there is a station three blocks away.

I guess I was as close as I was because he kept tryng to duck around this building or that alleyway or through a back yard.

Once I got on his trail when I "knew" that he was up to no good and was in phone contact with the cops, I was keeping about 25 feet away from him.

Yes you are right. After the first time he threw the tools I could have picked them up, but as we were walking and putting distance behind them I didn't think about them. Afterwards, however, as he was the aggressor and began to walk towards me instead of a steady walk away, we ended up going back over our tracks a few times, and he grabbed them again.

Although the bullet is the great equalizer, I this time, correctly assessed the situation as "not dangerous". He was an opportunist, about 50 years old, who would never have been able to out run me.

have a great day,

ps when the cops came along, he kept saying how I was calling him racial epithets over and over. I guess he was trying to make me out to be a jerk and gain favor by the fellows questioning him.

Ah, Richmond. John Hicks used to say, "For the first ten years of my life, I thought my name was 'Say, Fool!'"
