and it's a CROSS between an 870 and a Mossberg 590/500. I've owned about 5-6 of each in different configurations just since December of '08. Here's the main reasons why, I've neglected the differences I feel are less than important to me, at least:
870 - I like the fact that on an 18.5" setup, you usually have the extension flush with the barrel where as with a Mossberg it seems like it HAS to be 20" to be flush with barrel, on a 500 or 590.. It just looks good, and points good imo to be flush with barrel. A fully loaded with 2 3/4" ammo 870 tactical/express with 2 shot extension (6+1) points better than any tactical shotgun I've tried, ESPECIALLY a 590 (front heavy as hell). I also like the way their bead sights come. They just SEEM more durable than the Mossberg beads, even though they probably aren't any moreso. I also like that there are somewhat more aftermarket accessories for an 870.
Mossberg - Love the safety and slide release location, provided you're using a full stock, which I am. It feels much more natural to me and I can get off with a faster reload. I also feel like I can beat up my Mossbergs more, not because they're any more durable, but mostly because they cost a hell of a lot less! It's also much easier to screw off an endcap and remove the barrel than it is to wrestle with an extension and it's extra high powered spring. I like taking Mossbergs down more, even though the Remington is possibly a little simpler. Also, I like the look (and function) of heatshields and if you want a quality heatshield for an 870 it probably has to be custom made. The aftermarket ones don't seem to be worth much in the long run.
So this is my conclusion _ I really wish I could find a Mossberg 590a1 18.5 inch and throw on a 2 shot extension to make the tube flush with the end of the barrel...OR an 870 with a one piece extended mag tube (probably doesnt exist). Does Mossberg make an 18.5 A1 with barrel-flush mag tube? Anyone know a product number? Does anyone make a mag extension for the 18.5" 590s since they accept it whereas a 500 wouldn't? Also, I want a bead sight and heat shield. Let me know what you guys think about this thread. These are pretty much the glaring things that stick out to me after trying to put these 2 through their paces. It bothers me I've yet to find my perfect shotgun...
