S&W could care less about .22LR autoloaders at this point. Try and guess the percentage of their business and the associated profit involved with .22 LR autos that aren't the Model 41.
It's a perfectly solid little also-ran, but it's at about the same price point as offerings from Browning or Ruger.
Ruger MKII. Nothing like it...ergos, build quality, aftermarket parts, versatility, accuracy, reasonable price...and unlike many .22's, it actually looks like a handgun...
There are too many variations of each to make a selection as to which would be preferred. My Wife does better with the Buckmark, I do better with the S&W M22A. The M22A is easier to maintain, with the Buckmark needing two different sized hex head wrenches .
With cheap bulk pak ammo both the Buckmark and the M22A are far more reliable than any of our four Rugers.
Had the Buckmark (pictured above) and the S&W. Should have started with the Ruger MKIII I have now.
The S&W had too many FTF... PITA to clean. The Buckmark too many FTE, is an even bigger PITA to disassemble and clean. Plastic firing pin assembly easily gets chewed up trying to remove from gun. And whatever you do, don't take off the grips. My experience's anyhow.
Now I know why 80% of the guys in my club own Ruger's. Once you get the assembly procedure down its a piece of cake and they just plain work all the time.
Of course there are those that have just the opposite of my experience. Just throwing mine at you. Good luck.
22a is not the equal of ruger mk1 or mk2. had one, crap from the box, had to go back to S&W. i ate shipping, they had it about a month.
no problems with ruger 22/45. never liked the grip.
Why does everyone think the 22a is so hard to dissassemble and clean? There's a takedown button that lifts off the barrel, then the slide and recoil spring come off. That's it.
I have never had a FTF or FTE with my 22A. I have a red dot on the 7" barrel and it will put a dime size single hole at 50' for as many as you care to shoot. The price is right and there isn't much additional tuning that needs to be done to the stocker.Easy to disassemble and clean. The only "problem" is the plastic recoil pad that needs to be replaced every so often for about $1.00 I'm a fan of the 22A.Chuck.
Just purchased a Field 5.5. Beautiful gun with tack driving accuracy. The trigger comes with the overtravel screw already installed and is probably around two pounds of crisp breaking-glass-rod joy.
And I never - ever - want to clean a Ruger 22 pistol again.
