I've owned a few Rugers. I still own a 22A that my wife has taken over. But MY favorite is a Colt model that they don't make anymore. Colt .22 Man it's sweet! Cycles like crazy....never misses a beat. Can't say the same for Rugers or S&W 22A. I've never owned a Browning.

Depends on what you want to do with the gun.

For a gun that you might want to change barrels or add a threaded barrel for a suppressor, the Buck Mark is the way to go. The barreled receiver of a Ruger Mark II is the firearm whereas the Buck Mark barrel is just a barrel. The barrel on the Buck Mark is easy to swap. The price of a Tactical Solutions Tac-Lite versus a Trail Lite is an eye-opener. I have a threaded Ruger Mark II upper that is very nice, but it was a lot less expensive to buy a new barrel for the Buck Mark.

If you want the best feeling action or want to tweak, the Mark II is the way to go. The Volquartsen parts allow upgrades. The Mark II is also all steel and very durable whereas the Buck Mark and 22A have alloy frames. I went for the Ruger when I wanted an integrally suppressed .22.

I had a 22A and it was a good shooter. I got tired of replacing the white buffer every couple of bricks.

Ruger Mark III. Why? They come in many different flavors to fit your needs, are rock steady dependable, and are generally very accurate. Not to mention they are price competitive with the exception of 1 or 2 pistols on special sale at your local Dicks, Gander Mtn., etc.

I had some issues with my Buckmark, but it is still my favorite 22LR pistol in production. I have no qualms recomending it.

Lots of good .22s, but I favor the Buckmark. I won't claim it's "better" than any other; it just fits my hand very well, points easily, and I like it.

Hmm........might have to give Ruger a look. Thanks fellas.

+1 for a used Mark II or a new MarkIII

Why ..... they are reliable and accurate. My Mark II 5.5 BBL is over 20 years old and has never given me a single problem. Looks and shoots like new.

I own both the Buckmark and the Ruger MKII. The ruger is twice the gun (for me) than the Buckmark. The Buckmark gives me light primer strikes about 1 in 20 rounds. Good luck trying to get that slide back after the hammer drops. When shooting with my father and sisters non of them can get the slide back when it gets a faliure to fire.
The Ruger on the other hand is flawless, the trigger is better than my Kimber. The construction and build quality is just so much more. The Buckmark is going back to Browning, hope they can fix it. Good luck to you, Sammy ;)

LOL, you think the Buckmark's slide is hard to rack...you'd cackle at the S&W 22A...

I own a Ruger Mark II and a Buckmark. I prefer the Ruger because of its heavier weight and ease of handling plus I definately shoot more accurate with it.

Get the one that fits and feels best to you. The 22A comes with a weaver rail for optics add-ons. Only the higher end Buck Marks come with this. The 22A is easier to field strip. Triggers on both are about the same. Accuracy and reliability is about the same. The 22A shoots better with standard velocity ammo and the Buck Mark doesn't seem to be quite as picky, but if you are going for group size the Buck Mark does better with SV ammo.

Also take a look at Rugers. If you want to tweak the pistol, the aftermarket for Ruger tweaks is outstanding. If you want to shoot un-modified, then it is a coin toss, but I believe Rugers have a slight edge although my personal best groups have come from a 22A with a 7" barrel.

I have

22A w/5.5" and 7" barrels
Ruger MKIII Hunter
Ruger MKIII 22/45
Buck Mark Standard

All a joys to shoot.

Not the greatest pic, but here's the newest Buckmark. Camper model, with Millett Red Dot mounted atop a Weigand base.

I have a Buckmark Micro. To me it has better ergos than a Ruger. The Rugers do feel more sturdy though. I flipped the sear spring over and bent it a little (per rimfirecentral.com) and it improved the already good stock trigger 100%.

I've had loads of fun with my MkII Ruger 22/45 (5.5" stainless barrel). Here's a MkIII:

The pluses: nice price, accurate, reliable, great fit and balance (YMMV)

The minus: front sight screw started to loosen itself after maybe 1k rounds. A tiny dab of Loctite fixed that.

Some people say basic take-down and cleaning of this gun is hard. I find it simplicity itself. I can take it apart and reassemble it in a few seconds with no special effort or tools. And Bore Snakes are your friends :)

All that said, I'm starting to think about adding a Buckmark to my collection--just because :) My one experience with a (rental) 22A was not fun: an ugly gun with repeated feeding/ejection problems.

I voted other: Beretta NEOS.

I thought they looked ugly, but my wife wanted one, so she got one.

Upon using one, I love it! Once I put loc-tite on the rear sight adjustment screws, anyway. I can hit our tiny 2" steel spinner targets at 25 yards all day. Easily. So far, it functions well with all the ammo we've put through it, except Remington Golden Bullets which fail to ignite the primer about 1 in 5 in every gun I've tried them. But never a jam. Not once.

No jams, and did I mention that it's very easy to clean? I could have the NEOS disassembled and cleaned and reassembled before you can get the Ruger apart. It's very much like the old Hi-Standard pistols.

Easy to clean, but did I mention why bother? After the initial cleaning/lube before shooting, we haven't cleaned it or oiled it. After over 4000 rounds, not a single jam. I am impressed. I never thought a .22 semiautomatic could possibly do that.

Not to mention the mags are only $10 and easy to load.

So many great 22's to choose from!

Of your picks I'd go for the Buckmark but... I prefer the Rugers over the Buckmark.

I sold my Buckmark last year because I just never shot it enough.

Here's my latest 22 project:

If you just want a high quality 22 that runs like a centerfire the Beretta 84 is an excellent choice as well...

Edited to add: One of the things I disliked most about the Buckmark was that to field strip it you had to take off the scope rail, a problem if you like to clean your gun and plan to mount a red dot. Some guys report that they never need to re-zero but I always had to, even if it was a little bit. I also hate having to remove screws to clean a gun, eventually they show a lot of wear even with proper equipment..
