Much like cholesterol, holsters build up over the years. The new Comp Tac Spartan is featured at the top of the heap

Over the past 10 years, something remarkable has happened in our country. Citizens are fighting to regain our Second Amendment rights, and we’re winning. You can now legally carry concealed in 39 states. This is a truly remarkable thing, as in the course of history it is rare for populations to regain rights once taken.

This wonderful and noble truth leads to some problems. Now that we can legally carry, a lot of us want to do so – and therein lies the rub.

Carrying a “real” gun is a pain in the – somewhere. Usually where you try to station your hog’s leg. I have carried big guns, small guns, Inside the Waistband (IWB), Outside the Waistband (OWB), front pocket and so forth and if there is one thing I believe it is that carrying a “real” gun is a pain.

Thankfully, holsters have evolved over the past few years. My starting point, the original IWB Summer Special type holster leaves a lot to be desired regarding support, stability, and comfort.

Kicking it Summer Special style. If you can get past the bulk of the design, the lack of lateral support, and the inability to tuck in, it is great...

I thought I had found heaven when I found the Milt Sparks Versa Max II. Sparks holsters are made to last a lifetime, and the VM2 allows for tremendous stability, support, ability to reholster – it does almost everything well… “but”. While it can be converted to a “tuckable” IWB, it doesn’t work well as such for me in that format. If I’m not going to tuck in, a VM2 is often my choice, but I prefer to tuck my shirt in. I am already ugly, so I prefer to not look unkempt and sloppy.

Tons of support, very stable, metal band to keep the mouth open, and tremendous craftsmanship - but still a little thick, and doesn't tuck well

While the VM2 was good, my quest continued and I found the Comp – Tac C.T.A.C. Sweetness, and for a good long while, a CTAC with a G36 was my carry rig. First, it is designed to be tuckable by design. Second, the clips come in a variety of options and you can actually use clips that tuck in behind your belt. Third, the CTAC blends leather and kydex – it bends where it needs to, and is firm where it should be… it is a great holster. Finally, the kydex just seems to work better with a Glock than anything else.

CTAC with a 1911. I would have pictured my G36 rig, but it is set up for a specific belt due to the hidden clips system

Last week, the best of both worlds arrived. The new Comp Tac Spartan is all that and a side of fries.

The Spartan marries leather and kydex. It supports the gun beautifully and can be adjusted to ride at almost any height and angle. It is as thin as it can be. It tucks even more easily than a CTAC.

This is one of those things that is so simple, yet so much better.

Another angle to show how the leather rides

If you are going to train with your gun, you *need* a holster that won’t collapse when you draw your weapon. In training and real life, you need to be able to reholster without looking like “a raccoon trying to open a bag of potato chips” (Smithism). The whole purpose of a holster is that we need a place to put the gun – and if you have taken it out, we will probably need to put it back.

I personally have a little extra me in the love handle area, and the feeling of pinching yourself between a steel gun and rigid holster just sucks. The Spartan has a large enough piece of leather that you don’t face this problem. You also won’t have to worry about very cold or very hot steel against your flesh. The kydex shell has adjustable tension, so you can make the draw as easy or the retention as tight as you deem necessary.

The model I got to play with was a prototype and for a Glock 19 and it worked very well for that gun. Many people much smarter than me consider the G19 to be an ideal carry gun, and in the Spartan I am carrying mine more comfortably than I ever have before in ANYTHING else.

I can’t wait to try one out for a Glock 36 or 1911 – I’ve got a custom bobtailed Titanium Commander being built that is just begging for a holster like this.

There is a more “deluxe” model available that doesn’t have anything exposed on the back – my basic model just has some moleskin covering the screw retainers. Either way works, just depends on your personal taste.

The "high end" MTAC model -

A pic of the back of the Spartan, also a stock photo. The Spartan looks similar on the front, but has the screw retainers exposed on the back. On mine, they are covered with moleskin and it is 100% comfortable.

All in all, I continue to be impressed with Comp Tac quality and innovation in general.

PS – if anyone at Comp Tac is listening, you need to make the Spartan for a P7M8. I’ll provide the model if you need one!

I ordered an MTAC because it fits my SP2009, I'm quite pleased to see this review as it's exactly why I bought that holster. I also bought a Bianchi Shadow II holster for OWB carry.

I got a MTAC for Christmas, and I must say its awesome. I was going to wait 6 months for one of the leather iwb's, but not now. I can carry my Kimber Custom all day in complete comfort - even getting in and out of the car. Great Holster!

Well it had better be that good. Just ordered mine on your reports. Thanks for the site. Looks like a good holster. Thanks again.

So, who copied whom?

I got one of these a couple months ago for my XD9:

My first one. Still not sure if I like it. Looks a lot like the one you're reviewing so I'm glad to hear others' opinions. Mine has the same open rivets on the back and I haven't found them to be any problem.

I like the leather that stays between the grip and rear of the barrel area and my body.

It's comfortable most of the time. I think I'm just too short or something because the area I think needs to be adjusted for me is the part that meets the crease between my hip and leg when I sit down. As I try to figure out if I need to just move the clip or cut the leather, I think neither will work. The way it drops in to rest on the pant waist/belt stays the same. If someone has a suggestion, please share.

Only other complaint is that the kydex squeaks. At least, I think it's the kydex.

End of the day, I think I'm a happy customer. I'm hoping not to end up w/ a pile of holsters like the OP.

Anyway, I'm more curious as to which of these is the original, or if I'm incorrect in saying that one is a copy of the other.

Peace,
igotnothin

2nd Edit: Actually, now that I look back at yours (esp the deluxe) I think yours might solve the sitting down problem that I think mine has. I'm going to have to do more research. Thanks for your detailed review w/ pics!

No problem. There are a number of differences between the one you pictured and the Comp Tac model, as is detailed by two guys who discuss that in some depth in this same thread on Glocktalk.

Short version -

Comp Tac uses better/thicker Kydex, the Spartan has modular bodies, i.e. one piece of leather can serve for multiple guns, and the tension is adjusted via an allen wrench with COmp Tac, but HEAT with that one.

For me, easy choice.

How about a link to the GT thread?

Nice review and pics. However, personally, I'm kind of a leather purist because I like the looks. Maybe that makes me a holster snob, but I just haven't been able to warm up to the Kydex yet.

I may have to go give one of these a test drive since I'm reading such postive press from owners.

Nice writeup BTW. I was a little leary of a CompTac employee surreptitiously pushing a product in this thread, but a thorough read proved that not to be the case. Good work, thanks for the effort to share.

I am not a CT employee, afflliate, dealer... don't know anyone there personally. I have run group buys for the product b/c I personally use and believe in them.

FWIW, I'm a stockbroker that happens to be a gun nut as well.

Wore it some more Sunday and actually did a good bit of work from the holster at the range... really liking the Spartan and the G19 more and more.

Clips

big, obvious clips are a big problem for me. I like that those clips are slim and less obtrusive. I seem to have a tendency to break Kydex clips after a few months, and I got sick of replacing them.

Finally got some flat spring stock from Brownells and made my own, about as wide as a belt loop on the outside but full width inside where they mount on the holster. Spring-tempered 'em and blued 'em up. Much better, and two years now of daily use with no problems. Almost unnoticeable.

So, who copied whom?
Tucker Gunleather was the first to make a kydex/leather hybrid holster to my knowledge. They called it "the answer" and its been around for several years. Comp-tac did (assuming still does) the kydex for them. Crossbreed started making (rather shoody looking iffy designed in my opinion btw) holsters of that style a year or two ago. Comptac appears to have started doing their own leather for their own take on "the answer." I think if anyone gets credit for this design, its Tucker.

Ack!!!:barf::barf::barf:

my personal experience with holsters is limited, as I can't afford to drop $50-$100 several times experimenting......

YMMV, but IWB just aint for me! :(

flipped to a pancake and found appropriate cover garments...:):)

but the money spent on a quality gun belt has proven to be WELL worth it and together with my Don Hume pancake makes me comfy and happy ;)

I emailed Randy at Comp-Tac and got a reply in about 30 minutes; I was looking in the wrong spot on their site. Good service and I think I'll pick one of these up for my J frame.

Recieved my Minotaur with the J-Clip and slide through and can run anything from xd sub nine to the 5 inch 45 tacticle. Seems to be very comfortable. I to was a strong side belt guy but this might be the answer for me. So far am really impressed. Time will tell.

I'm surprised-iwb holsters can be huge! Makes me like my Fist iwbs that much more. Jeez-exposed t-nuts, enormous platforms, over sized clips, not for me. CC is, imho, supposed to be stealthy, not borderline obvious. With Fist iwbs I do not need baggy clothing.
