There were a number of different variations of the Sears J. C. Higgins Model 10 which are distinguished from one another by teh Sears reference number 583.??. The 583 part of teh number was sears source code for High Standard. Tha balance of the number tells teh model and variation. After December 1956 there should be an assembly date code on teh barrel just forward of the receiver.

That should be the 1st Generation of the Model 10's then, if the numerology goes how I think it goes. If I recall correctly, my four different ones (marked Sears/JC Higgins) go from 583.13 thru 583.18. And all of them were the recalled ones.....

It`s a Hi Standard Model 10, 2 & 3/4in. shells..................
Thanks! I just checked and it is chambered for 2 3/4 in shells like you posted.

Just thought I'd ask......is High Standard still in business?

I am officially in the 'geezer' rank and had one of these when in the 6th grade.

Mine had xtractors on opposite sides of the bolt. After several years in the rack and seldom firing, one of the two xtractor 'hooks' disappeared. Although it didn't work as a repeater, it still lit the primer as a single shot.

Its disrespectful, but, I'm inclined to say it was marketed as a 'Ted Williams' Model.
