morning fellas...

i've been carrying concealed for about 10 years. started out w/ a 6-shot 686, but the size and weight became too much, so i moved to a 1911. i didn't care for my colt's finish getting abused, so i moved to a sig 229, and i thought i found the perfect carry gun. a recent purchase of a s&w 637 changed that, though.

started out in an ankle holster, but hated the inaccessability and contortions it took to get to the weapon, so i picked up a galco hi-ride holster, and i really like that set up. the gun actually disappears under an untucked t-shirt! i've read about such things in the past, but never believed it was truly possible to carry owb w/ just a t-shirt (my everyday wear) for a cover garment! now gone are the hot flannels and button down cover shirts... seemed that the bottom of the holster would peek out under the shirt, or the grip would print terribly.

anyway, being more of an auto kind of guy, i sure wish i had taken the j-frame advice posted time and again on this board a long time ago. the weight of the gun makes it easy for me to forget i am carrying. truth be told, i notice the belt much more than i notice the holster and gun...

although it took awhile, i'm glad i took the j-frame advice. wish i woulda done it sooner.

any success in getting grips for your new J yet??
just got mine today in the mail.
Was meaning to ask you-it's been some time since I have been to Gary's, and you mentioned going there for a holster. Do they have a good selection on hand? Any other suggestions to check out in Sioux Falls?
I will be turning in my carry app tomorrow to the Sheriff's Dept.....hopefully I will need to go shopping for a holster :D

i tried to order the hogue grips this afternoon but didn't have time for holding. try again tomorrow morning.

gary's has a pretty good selection of holsters. most of the holsters they carry are galco, but they have a limited selection of kydex, nylon, and other synthetics. they did have holster purses, but my wife made do w/ something else, and that was awhile ago. if you don't mind galco, or like galco, they have quite a bit there. i got my 1911, sig 229, s&w 637 holsters (all galcos) at gary's. average price i would imagine is around $60 (ask them to come down before you commit... they don't move down much, but they are open to some negotiation, and whatever salesmember you are dealing w/ has the authority to move a little). they usually have brown and black horsehide both on hand... if you have a tremendous drive, i'd definitely call ahead of time. they also run a pretty good selection of grips and magazines, and of course, they have a few guns, too.

if you are bent on a non-leather holster, might have better luck at cabela's in mitchell (another hour for you to drive). scheels does have some holsters on hand, but their selection is extremely limited.

what i like about gary's is that all their guys are 'gun guys', and all but one carry all the time, so they do have lots of good firsthand knowledge on what works w/ what.

lately i've been seeing a lot of girls/women in there, so they do have some knowledge on how to get a woman appropriately outfitted.

Takes time to see the light - sometimes!

I am a bit stuck on my SIG right now but - my SP-101 in its Jim Burke High Ride (or Kevin of K&D Holster's copy) is about the dog's danglies. A nice and tight-in small revo is almost as good as it gets IMO - and I do NOT get on with IWB either.

Here comes summer - and here probably comes SP-101 again.!

Thanks a ton--I really appreciate the help! Last time I was in Gary's, they were super busy, and this was on a weekday afternoon....there was one gentleman who offered to help me find what I was looking for and made me feel welcome, which means alot to me in a place I do not frequent.
(BUT he didn't have a model 27  Must get)

It is 140 mi for a drive to Sioux Falls, and 120 to the Twin Cities, but I would WAY rather go to Sioux Falls. no doubt at all

Bean357,

Nice touch, you're making that 36 look better than ever. You need to send me a couple pictures of that new 66!

Here is the newest addition 66 along with the set of grips I am in the middle of refinishing for it. Just completed sanding on them tonight...:
