Hello,

I just picked up a new Mossberg 590A1 last week. In this period of time I've had the gun's slide jam on me twice. Since I owned it I've fired a bout a box of shells through the gun. A mix of buckshot, slugs and birdshot. After the gun jammed the 1st time I brought it to my local gunsmith for him to look at. He said there was nothing wrong with the gun & that it was the shells that I was using at the time. Those were Winchester Super-X birdshot loads. So I got the gun back & loaded it up with some Federals birdshot loads and had the same results as the first time. After firing the slide locks right up and you have to force the slide back to get the shell out of it.

Any suggestion on what to do? The gun is clean. I don't have problems with these shells with any of my other shotguns. Should I send the gun back to Mossberg? Find a new gunsmith? Sell or trade it for another firearm?

I really like the Mossberg shotguns because of the safety location because I'm left handed. But if the gun going to jam after a few shots :fire:

Since you've tried different shells, I suggest sending it back to the factory.

Mossberg is good about fixing things, and since it's a new top-end Mossberg, they should be the ones to fix it RIGHT.

Just one thought..

You aren't being soft on the gun, are you?
Pump shotguns need to be worked vigorously or they may jam.
You say it has to be "forced back".. well, naturally so.
You do have to give it a hard shucking to expect it to work flawlessly.

It is always possible you did get a defective gun.. Mossberg sells a lot of guns. Law of averages says it's a possibility. Both the 500 I purchased and my 835 have been flawless, however. I've always made sure to give them a good, hard shuck and slam it back home, however.

They both did work easier after a loud, enthusiastic break in session.

i was having the same issue with my 870, it would jam up on some old (about 5 years old) federal loads and new winchester birdshot. i got some remington birdshot and it hasn't done it once. i decided it was a mix of cheap ammo and the shotgun being relatively new ( only about 2500 rounds through it)

I have a brand new 835 Ultimag that did that same thing to my wife a few times. She would pull the slide back and it would jam up on her. Wouldn't eject or close again. I took it and gave it a few nice solid racks and everything seems fine now. I told her not to go so easy on the slide and she hasn't had a problem since. Hard for me to criticize though, I have a bad habit of handling all my guns with kid gloves too.

Maybe just rack it with a little more force. At least until it is broken in well. Should smooth up after a few hundred shells.

Thanks for the input. This weekend I'll try giving the gun a good workout. I will making sure that I'm not being soft with the pump. If it keeps jamming I'll sned it back under warranty.
