Hi,

I tried my self-defense shotgun, a Winchester 1300, with basic remington 00 buckshot. The gun has functioned flawlessly with bird shot for several hundred rounds (including getting a few doves!). It is a very well used gun, and the action is very smooth with little resistance. The gun also functioned very well with slugs, with no problems.

When I fired the gun with buckshot, the fore-end would fully pump during the recoil, and then jam on the next shell about 50% of the time. Is this due to bad form on my part or should the pump have more resistance? The third option seems to be pick buckshot with less recoil.

The fact that it does fine on slugs and birdshot makes me think it is related to the higher recoil of the buckshot. However, what would proper shotgunning form be to prevent recoil pumping?

I've never seen a forend move that much due to recoil. Honestly, it's hard to say for sure what's going on without seeing you fire it. Though... why aren't you holding the forend?

Sorry for the confusion. I am holding the forend, my arm is coming back with the forend during recoil.

The Win1300s are designed to 'speed pump' and that may exacerbate the 'recoil pumping' you've experienced. Don't try to prevent it- go with it! Concentrate on bringing the forearm all the way back briskly till it stops, then moving it briskly forward till it stops again as the bolt closes.

Sounds to me as if the recoil and the unexpected sensation of the forearm coming back is making you shortstroke the gun.

Win1300s tend to be fairly light weight, and hard kicking shells really show off in them, in my experience. There are some good reduced recoil buckshot loads available- try some of those, especially the Fiocchi offering. That's the softest shooting buckshot load I have found so far.

Hello friends and neighbors // +1 go with it

When shooting pump shotguns or rifles I am actively pulling back on the forearm as part of my grip. They are made to assist this "speed pump" as in #4 post.
One of the things that make a pump my favorite.

Either that, or they couldn't figure out how to keep them locked shut with heavy loads. :D

My brother-in-laws early 1200 would blow the action open with magnum loads hard enough to raise blisters on your hand from the forearm slipping through it!!

Never did care for it acting that way at all myself!
