This Is My First Post On This Site, I Hope Someone Has Some Idieas
I Have A Cust Wants Me To Repair His Japanese Type 38
His Father Brought It Back From Wwii. The Stock Is Beat Up And Scared Badly. Does Anyone Have Any Ideias About What To Do With This Stock. It Was Positivley Used In The War. This Man Took It From A Japanese Soilder. Should I Do Anything To It Or Not. It Has Set In His Closet For Over 60 Years.

If it were me...depending on the condition of the stock, I would leave the stock alone and just break down the rifle to is metal components and go to town with CLP and a butt load of rags (maybe a little 0000 steel wool if necessary) but thats it. If the stock is scared up than I would leave it be.

Has the Mum been ground off (top of front receiver ring)? If not and everything else is there, original, and in relatively good shape, it will be worth some money. Didn't used to be true, but they have gained in collector value with the military collectors in the last few years.
If it has been modified (low/bent bolt handle, drill/tap for scope), then maybe not.

To clarify, the name is Arisaka; the Type 38 is in caliber 6.5x50 mm, a fairly low power semi-rimmed cartridge, although the rifle is extremely strong. Sporting ammunition is still available.

Thank You Mr. Jim For Correcting My Spelling. Is The 1st A Silent When Pronounced As In "ariska"? And If The Metal Is Rusted Would You Recommend Re-bluing?
Thanks,
Bryan

Japanese rifles

I shot a doe last year with a 6.5 Jap out of a Japanese Type 44 Carbine, the last variant with a floated barrel inside the bayonet nose cap. That rifle really shoots. I've got another 44 that is junk- most pieces were bubbaed or are missing. It shoots but bulges cases near the case head. I've got access to another Type 38 Carbine. Might try it.

Interesting guns and very affordable still. Hope you preserve this one as much as possible. Ammo available commercially for 7.7 and 6.5 Jap.

Is it a LONG gun or a carbine?

blackfork,

the arisaka is a long gun, and the only thing missing is the bayonet, and the safety knob. got that coming. do you recommend re-bluing if the barrel is rusted?

Hi, Brian,

I think that the correct Japanese pronunciation would be something like AH-REE-SAW-KAH, but most Americans say "ARA-SACKA", with the "ARA" as in the former Notre Dame coach, Ara Parseghian.

If there is any desire to keep the gun original looking, I would avoid rebluing. Just cleaning off any live rust should do and the gun would not look "bubba'd". FWIW, I use a product called G96 Gun Treatment for most rust removal and penetrating purposes, but others have other favorites. Also, I use brass or copper wool with it, not steel wool, but again some prefer steel wool.

Mr. Jim,

Thanks Again For Your Advice. I Have Worked On Shot Guns And Riffles For Over 25 Years. But I Have Never Fooled With Army Or Military Weapons. In Louisiana We Have A Lot Of Bird And Dear Hunters, And I Have Always Stuck To That Work. So I Didn't Want To Do Anything Wrong With This Gun. The Firing Pin Spring And Safety Cap Were Missing. I Think I'll Just Install The Parts And Clean The Rust Off.

Again Thanks For Your Help,

Bryan

If you are interested in firearms design, that bolt is a marvel. It has only six parts, including the safety, and can be completely disassembled without tools of any kind. The Mauser 98 bolt has ten parts and I think the M1903 Springfield bolt has 14.

Mr Jim,

Thanks For All Of Your Help. You Seem To Know A Lot About These Weapons. I Have Been A Gunsmith For Over 20 Years, But I Have Always Resisted Fooling With Anything Other Than Shot Guns And Hunting Riffles. So My Knowledge Of How Far To Go With One Of These Is Slim. I Just Didn't Want To Mess Up A Gun With So Much History. It Was A Fun Project, The Gun Was Fairly Easy To Work On. I Replaced The Missing Firring Pin Spring, And Safety Knob. Cust Said It Shoots Great.

Ps. What If Any Is Your Favorite Cold Bluing System. I Have Had Very Good Luck With Blue Wonder. It's Hard To Find Locally But I Have Done About 15 Guns With It And I Have Been Pleased With The Finished Job Of This Formula. Have You Had Any Experience With It Or Do You Prefer Some Other Formula? I Have Never Had Any Luck With Burchwood Or Others That I Tried. Until I Used The Blue Wonder I Would Send Out Parts To Have Hot Blued. Now I Am Satisfied With The Finnish Project Using Blue Wonder. Any Comments About Bluing?

Thanks Again For All Of Your Help,

Bryan

I have 2 Arisaka 38 custom. and rebarreled .308 Winc tight chamber and 9,3x57Mauser. The boltaction is very strong and much better than Mausers.

I don't have a "favorite" cold blue system because all of them, IMHO, are worthless for a full blue job. They usually don't do a good job and don't last. For just touchup I usually use G96 Gun Blue Paste. I also have found Birchwood even more useless than the others.

Mr. Jim,

I'm Glad To Hear It's Not Just Me And The Other 50 People That I Know. I Wonder Why In This Day Of Technology That We Cant Have A Superb Blue Thats Easy To Use, Thats Better Than Anything Used Before.

I Guess Thats About Enough About This Gun. I Replaced The Firing Pin Spring, Safety Knob, And Cleaning Rod. I Cleaned The Boar, Parts Cost About $46.00. Cust Paid Me $210.00. It's Out The Door.

Thanks For All Your Help.

Bryan

I also have a type 38 that has been rechambered into a 6.5x57mm. it has a lyman peep sight. It will shoot 2" groups at 100 yards.

If the mum is still there leave it alone clean it up and call it good. if not they are not worth much at all. they are a very strong action. I read in an old early post WWII book that a firearm researcher did everything he could to blow up the action but nothing even packing powder in to the case and pluging the barrel with another bullet and firing the overloaded cartridge. Nothing happend to the action.

cpttango30,

Thank you for your info. yes the mumm is still there on this gun. I delivered it back to cust yesterday.

thanks,

bryan
