Japanese hunting knives

I recently discovered the Japanese knife makers and have a lot to learn. Checking out the Toyokuni knives. Are there any recommended makers for Damascus blades?

Just made the mistake of actually scrolling through the above site... I simply got lost in it -and only checked one category. What marvelous craftsmanship (even though 95% of what I looked at was wildly out of my price range...). Simpy outstanding work being shown there.

I spent last summer making knives with a competent knife maker, as gifts to family members. Not enough time to learn much, but went over his catalogs with him and discovered the various grades of steel used. The high prices you have found likely reflect same. I know just enough to suggest you become informed before buying.

Made two Damascus. Beautiful stuff out there. Maybe order a couple of catalogs. Easy to get burned.

Everything Hattori is sold out, I guess the firm is gone. I am glad I got these when I did:



Hattori made a number of knives for other brands, I am quite certain Cold Steel Trailmasters were made by Hattori, and then of course, Fallkniven. I purchased a number of "cheap" Parker Cutlery knives, all made in Japan, back in the 1980's or 1990's, and for "cheap" knives, they all were well made. I sort of feel guilty about the one I wore out scraping gasket residue off cylinder heads, water pumps. Hattori was never cheap though, and none of the knives at Japanese knives direct are cheap, but the ones I have are good knives.
