JC Higgins model 50?

Dear All,
I saw a Jc Higgins model 50 in 30-06 (FN Mauser action) for sale today at a local gunshop for $230. IT was in decent condition. What can you tell me about this gun- is it a true large ring mauser, how is the quality on it, etc. I would be interested in buying it as a deer and hog rifle. Also, later, when I get some money, is this action good to build a custom rifle off of.

I've got on in .270. The rifle has killed many deer and elk.
