I acquired a Jennings J-22 and the sear is not engaging the firing pin. It moves up and down with the trigger, just never catches the firing pin. Any suggestions?

Hard to say without additional information. But perhaps these ideas might help more than just saying it's junk:
If it is one of the early 'sliding horizontal safety' models, make sure the safety is 'off'. The early version J-22 cannot be cocked with the safety on. Later versions had a 'up-down vertical safety' lever.
Some other things to look for; dirt/grease not letting the sear come up fully, broken sear spring, linkage under the grip panel is binding, firing pin damaged, firing pin channel has a burr.
.

Thanks for the info. It does have the sliding safety, but that is not it, but I hadn't checked for a burr on the channel. That's possible

It is pretty much that, but I've got no money in the gun and just like trying to make it work. Thanks for the help.

I don't know if this is a bug or a feature. My J22 would not cock if the striker was down and the safety "on": the slide would not retract far enough to cock or to feed a round from the magazine. To cock and load the gun, if the striker was down on an empty chamber, you had put the safety "off" then rack the slide. Theoretically if you carried empty chamber, striker down, safety "on", if someone snatched the gun from you, they possibly would not be able to use the gun, which might qualify as a "feature" rather than a bug.

Many MANY years ago i use to order them into my shop, strip them completely, and put them together deburred and smoothed up with a trigger job. Once done, they were reliable and quite accurate. I've shot a LOT of grouse for the table with a pocket Jennings 22.

The more I mess with this the more I have to agree. It won't feed ot eject, but I do have two good magazines for it. Maybe I'll part it out.

Have you solved this issue yet? This may seem like a dumb question but did you check if the sear was facing the right direction? I've heard of tons of them not engaging the firing pin when you rack the slide because somebody took the gun apart and put the sear in facing the wrong direction. I know that one time I did this with my Raven and it acted the same way, its easy to overlook.

Also using the right ammo will help as they're very picky about what they'll feed, CCI Stingers and Minimags work the best and contrary to popular belief the gun will not self destruct on you using high velocity ammo.

Someone offered to give me one. I took one look at the way it was made and decided I didn't want to even spend my time loading the magazine.:uhoh:

I've had one for years and they are good enough for a tackel box gun. From what you say it could be one of threee things. 1. Sear Assembly in backwards, the high part should be at the rear. 2. The Sear spring is just worn out. 3.. the Firing pin is in backwards, the long end goes to the rear. If it is the spring Numrich has them for a couple of bucks.

Everything is in correctly and the spring still appears to work good. I might mess with the spring a little but the gun is pretty much crap

The J22 is not junk. It is superior to the HP22 everyone thinks is so great.

Anyway, the sear is installed backwards. Turn it 180* and it should work flawlessly.

Code:
With the slide off the gun, the sear that catches
the striker should look like |\ viewed from the right.

If it looks like /| it was installed backwards.

I hate to feel I have to defend a J22 especial since I recognize its limitations.
While I would not recommend a J22 as a first gun and not as a heavy use
gun, I have had one for several years now and it has been a reliable
backup gun for carry in the jacket pocket in the woods.
I find that used J22s are often abused or poorly maintained.

Thanks for all the replies. The gun is put together properly. I may part it out. It won't feed or eject and the sear won't catch. Too much wrong

Update. I finally figured out that the slide is not going back all the way. Every once in a while it will go back and cock. I can't figure out why though.
