I have heard that most 1911s are designed for ball ammo of a particular weight and I have also heard that that was just the original ones and that most modern 1911s should have feed ramps designed for hollowpoints. My question is this: The Springfield Arms Mil Spec 1911 is a modern remake of the old 1911s from WWll right? So dose it have a feed ramp designed to feed hollowpoints reliably or dose it have the older feed ramp designed for ball ammo only?

I had a gunsmith to do his 'reliability package' on my SA 1911. Basically, he re-cut the feed ramp, polished the chamber, made sure the extractor was properly ground/adjusted.

I've shot everything from ball to JHP to lead semi-wadcutters...never had a failure in about 5000 rds.

Unlike the WW2 guns, the GI does have a throated barrel and feed ramp. I have not had it very long but my GI has digested everything I have put in the magazine so far

Needs a few hundred rounds to break in though, mine was VERY tight!

My stainless Mil-spec has gobbled up Silvertips and Hydra-Shoks without a hiccup since day one. I had a small extractor problem but replaced the extractor with the Wilson Bulletproof unit and haven't seen a problem yet. My Springer is more reliable than both Colts I own...seriously!

Thanks for your replies:)

Basically I want to know about its abilty to feed hollowpoints out of the box. I am debating between a Mil Spec 1911 .45 or a Taurus 92. I would like to own a .45, I already have a 9mm and it would be nice to have a 1911 but I also want a gun that I can use for self defence if need be and for that I have to have a gun that will reliably feed hollowpoints without a "reliability package". So to rephrase my question

Can I expect a SA Mil Spec to reliably feed hollowpoints out of the box ?

Yes, you can, but all hollowpoints are not created equally.

Springfield recommends Golden Saber.

I have never had any problems with that brand, in two milspecs.

Mine has eaten all hollowpoints, I keep mostly the Gold Dots 230gr in it.
