I have a friend who is selling his 9mm ammo to buy 357. I don't know for sure what to buy as he has it reasonable. FMJ is $12 for 50 rds and JHP is $20 for 50 rds. I have $100 to spend, how would you spend it? This is factory ammo, no reloads. Thanks

Do you need defensive/carry ammo? That's the primary reason for the existence of JHP. For target/plinking/practice/whatever there's no reason not to get the FMJ stuff.

I'd go with 5 FMJ and 2 JHP for $100. That would give you some of both.
I agree with this ^^^^^

PMC JHP 115gr velocity is 1160fps
PMC FMJ 115gr velocity is 1150fps
I would still use one 50 round box of JHP for target practice and the other box for defensive ammo. According to what I read the JHP is basically assembled like their Starfire ammo. Good ammo.

Scroll down to “Features” on this link for info on the PMC JHP ammo.

Not enough info.

$20 for 50 rounds of HP might be a screaming deal depending on the ammo. Good quality HP ammo is $1/round or more. If he is selling HP at $20/50 rounds it is either really cheap HP ammo or a fantastic deal. If it's not quality ammo I'd just put my money in the FMJ. If it's the good stuff buy $100 worth and buy FMJ later.

Around $12/50 rounds is about the going rate locally for new FMJ 9mm ammo so that isn't really a deal. I can do as well or better. One of the local ranges is selling 9mm FMJ at $10/50 rounds, but only if you buy an hour of range time at $10/hour.

It's blazer brass and PMC brass cased ammo in both FMJ OR JHP. He is selling because he sold his 9mm he bought last year and got a 357 mag. The ammo is about a year to only a few weeks old, he has kept it in a room with a dehumidifier. My local shop has FMJ at $20 for 50rds at the cheapest and their jhp is only sold in 20 to 25 rds to a box and prices are from $25 to $40 depending on brand.

I would take all the FMJ I could get. The best deal I found online last time worked out to $14 per box with taxes and shipping included.

As others have said, not much need to have more than a box or so of HP at any one time.

Both are good prices, but the questions that need answered for this decision are "what do you NEED" and "is the JHP a brand/bullet mass you want for self defense".

Good self defense ammo isn't cheap, especially nowadays. $20 for 50 is a great deal.

But buying bulk (500 or 1,000 round cases) right now can see $12 a box already. This, based on prices shown in The Armory in Virginia Beach.

Ok, thought I would update and tell you what I did. Several of his and my friends showed up but I got to choose first since I called him back first telling him I would be there today. I sold some used car parts the last few days and having beautiful weather here in Kentucky (then, not now), my wife had a couple yard sales and split the money with me to also help. I bought 20 boxes of the FMJ as he said if I bought over 15 that he would let it go at $10 a box. I bought 8 boxes of the JHP and because I bought a good bunch of FMJ that he let me have the JHP at $15 a box. I would have bought more but others were needing some and he had close to 12,000 rounds and I believe I bought what I could while still leaving plenty for others. Thanks

I have shot some PMC ammo in the past and never considered to be anything more than plinking ammo in any caliber. I would grab all the FMJ I could afford and shoot steel or similar targets with it to keep in practice.
