Some of the problems might just be teething pains in a new design, but design flaws are another matter. It would be nice to have another dedicated and capable semiauto fighting shotgun on the market, but it seems Mossberg has trouble getting it right.

FWIW, YMMV, etc-

Mossberg 930 Shotgun

19 Nov 07

Mossberg M930, Autoloading Shotgun:

During an Urban Rifle/Shotgun Course in OH last weekend, a student brought a brand-new copy of Mossberg's M930 Shotgun. It is the first one I've had a chance to actually use and observe on a range.

Bottom line: The 930 is unusable for our purposes.

Problems became apparent immediately as the student attempted to manipulate the gun. Once loaded, the entire magazine tube must be completely voided and then subsequently recharged all over again, in order to return the shotgun to Transport Mode (magazine tube charged, hammer down on an empty chamber, manual safety "off," Transport Mode is often referred to as "Cruiser-Ready" ). In addition, when attempting the load the gun, it continually double-stacked, causing two rounds to be released from the magazine tube into the receiver, simultaneously.

After ten, frustrating minutes of attempting to come up with a viable handling procedure, we gave up and issued the student a Remington 870, which, of course, ran fine for the duration.

Some years ago, Mossberg produced another autoloading shotgun, dubbed the " Jungle Gun." Now long-since out of production, we had nothing but trouble with it too.

Mossberg is surely capable of producing functional shotguns, but this new 930 is utterly unsuitable for our purposes. Again, when making ostensible " police" shotguns, they need to talk with someone other than trap shooters!

We talked about his opinion on Shotgun World. I and many others had no problems figuring out how to get the SPX in Transport Mode "Cruiser-Ready". It is basically the same procedure as you would do on an 870 that he issued to the student. So he should of had no problem doing it on the Moss 930 SPX. You stick your finger in through the loading port pushing the elevator up and hold the shell in the mag tube with your finger, eject the shell in the chamber with your other hand, remove your finger and push the bolt release and let the bolt fall on an empty chamber, pull the trigger to release the hammer.

I feel John Farnam has a little problem with excessive Brand Loyalty. So much so it caused him give a amateurs opinion of the excellent Mossberg 930 SPX. He didn't even try it out to see how it would have performed on the coarse. I believe J. Farnam is in the very small minority with his opinion of the SPX. I wounder what the student did with his new SPX after Mr. Farnam declared it not worthy.

If he doesn't want it, I'd be happy , (Oops, sorry) willing to grudgingly take that worthless POS off his hands:barf:. All he has to do is give me his address, and I'd send him the shipping costs so he's not out of pocket:rolleyes:.
