Basic 870 HD version. $299 at a local gun show NIB. If what I see on store racks and at shows is any indication, the extended mag HD version seems to be much more popular than the short mag version.
Now, I think you're supposed to soak the finish with Break-Free or some other lube?
Remington 870 was the first firearm I ever purchaed, followed my many more. Now go out and get some #4 for home defense, #0, #00 & Slugs go through walls too easily, and Have a Blast.
The 870's are great guns. Very smooth and reliable. If you haven't picked a lube yet, I'd suggest you look into CorrosionX. Not only does it make a fantastic general gun lubricant, it's the best and longest lasting rust proofer I've found. CLP works great but doesn't do so well long term. I don't know if it evaporates over time or what, but I've had guns rust up after a while in areas that I didn't relube regularly. CorrosionX also neutralizes skin acids, which is a big plus for folks like me with acid hands.
The 870 really is a great gun. I don't have one with the newer modifications, but my guess is theyb will last like the older ones and be just as reliable. The irony of owning a Remington is that they are made in New York, and while I live here and think that is great, NY gun laws suck eggs.
http://www.remington.com/safety/online_courses/ is a great place to learn about shotty basics. They have other courses that should give you a general idea of what is going on. If you like computer based training type stuff.
It takes you step by step through a manual of arms for it, how to carry, etc.
Reduced recoil slugs and 00 buck are better, and quite enough. You will need to pattern your gun to see which works best, but Federal Tactical, and Winchester get high marks from 870 owners with open chokes.
Remington 7/8 oz slugs are supposed to perform well, and are good for distance.
good choice: I have a 12 ga 870 SPS-T (a version of the Magnum Expess that is set-up for turkey hunting) that came with a 20" barrel w/ Hi-Viz adjustable sights and I added a 26" barrel w/ double bead sights and a variety of chokes;
Home Defense setup: 20" barrel, modified choke, Sellier & Bellot 2 3/4" 27 pellet #4 buckshot that patterned at 10 yards with @ 7 1/2" x 8 3/4" spread (the modified patterned the best out of 3 chokes tested: full, modified, and improved cylinder)
whenever I clean it, I soak a patch in my preferred lube (Kleen Bore Formula 3 conditioner...a cheaper CLP), wipe down all external metal surfaces, and remove excess with a cleaning rag...seems to do the trick
Welcome to the club. I see we're in good company here. All the finest 870 owners dropping by.
Yes, my 870P is one of my pride and joy long guns. (I don't have many; have just recently completed my optimal toolkit of five guns. The 870 is my one and only shotgun.)
Hey, I have a suggestion: "clubs" are becoming popular on THR. I'm already part of two: The 642 Club (now up to 1648 posts) and the newly formed 686 Club.
(Added as edit: And the even more newly formed 336 Club.)
I've been hanging out in the 642 Club for a year or so, now. It's one of the longest running threads on THR, and packs in a wealth of info about that little gun: rnds, grips, holsters, shooting tips, repair issues...
I expect the 686 Club will do something similar.
How about if we make this thread our 870 Club? It could be our clearing house for info on 870's.
Just a thought, but it'd be nice to have a LOT of info packed into one thread.
Definitely wipe down the finish with something that fights rust (I use CLP myself). My 870 got a tiny spot of rust after I hadn't done a wipe down in several months (and mind you, it had stayed in the house unfired during that time, and I live a DRY state). Quickly cleaned and wiped it down, and got the rust off. Now about once every month or so, I make sure to wipe it with a slightly oiled rag.
I've got about 4000 rounds or so through my 870 Express... good gun, but I would like the 870P better and I think I will get one one day. The Ps seem to be a bit more solidly built.
Welcome to the club! I joined just about a week ago and love my express. Rem Oil makes a good alternative and it's slightly cheaper than regular CLP around here. And of course Remington recommends it.
I won a raffle last night and was told that I could have 'any one thing' on the table.
I'm kicking myself in the backsides. . . I passed up an 870 with laminated stocks.
(Oh well. . . I've got 6 870s in the safe!)
