Looks like we could use a July Handgun Match, so I quickly whipped something together before the long weekend. Apologies to anyone in advance if I beat them to it.

As you'll quickly notice, this month's Match is heavily influenced by Steel Silhouette competition, except here you only need to touch the silhouette for a score, rather than knock it over.

The sizes of the silhouettes should be roughly correct, relative to each other and relative to the shooter.

Separate rimfire and centerfire categories. Rimfire is shot at 7 yards, centerfire is shot at 10 yards.

Take 2 standing unsupported shots per silhouette, and you get 1 point for each touch. No bonus points for touching the inner white circle; rather the white circle is used to break ties. In the event of a tie where neither touches the white circle, the one closest to it gets it.

Any handgun, iron sights or scoped. When posting your target, include info about the gun, caliber, indoor/outdoor, and ammo.

Remember: rimfire = 7 yards; centerfire = 10 yards.

Good Shooting!

wow just got done printing a target and was quite surprised at how small the silhouettes actually were! this will be a challenge, i decide to print two more targets just in case i miss the first lol.

I was going to the range today anyway, so I took a few of these along and took a whack at it myself, mostly to see if this whole thing is do-able. It is, but it aint gonna be easy. Yep - those targets are small. Printing several copies is a good idea. When my scanner cooperates, I'll post mine.

I've never shot metallic silhouette, so I did a little research, and tried to scale the silhouettes roughly proportionately (I threw the deer in as extra), so you ought to be seeing the silhouettes as silhouette shooters might see them. It gave me some serious appreciation for silhouette shooters, to be sure.

Good luck

ok so i thought i was gonna shoot a good target this morning.......when i set up the target and backed up to ten yards....i realized these things are gonna be tough just to hold steady on! i ended up doing about 20 dry fires and figured id give it a shot with live ammo when i can hold steady enough!

Here is my try

Ruger 22/45 , Indoors, 7 yards, iron sights, Remington Target Rifle, Eley LTD.

I tried 3 targets and each had one flyer. This was my closest flyer target.

Can you white out most of the target. That's a lot of ink. Yea, I'm cheap. I wish I had seen this before I went to the range today. ;) AC

Sweet!!

Magichelmt - I have you down for a Rimfire 9-1x (or is 2x?). Excellent job.

1858rem - your good for a Centerfire 6-2x. Terrific job, too.

Great start, fellas!

ill have more to come.....guess ill just update my old one or post a new pic?

MrBorland, you gonna post pics yet......where is gvnwst, does he shoot pistols?

I still haven't figured out the problem with our scanner, so I took pics instead. Sorry for the quality and size. I seem to be techno-challenged today.

I used a S&W 4" 617 .22LR revolver (rimfire) and 6" K-38 .38 (centerfire), shot indoors, 2-handed, double action.

Rimfire:
ammo: CCI Standard velocity
score: 10-2x

Centerfire:
ammo: 2.8gr bullseye/148gr HBWC
score: 7-1x

The pig and deer were heartbreakers

MrBorland I am sorry, but I do not know what the question means. I had 9 shots on target and one miss. Do I need to circle the shots? I am not being smart I just want to make sure I am know what I need to do. I do not know what the 1X or 2X means. Thanks.

Sorry - I should've explained.

The white dots are akin to an inner X-ring. I listed scores by the raw score followed by the number of X-ring touches. You had 9 hits on target, with a single hit on the X-ring, therefore a 9-1x.

Again, though, the x's are tie breakers, so a 9-1x beats an 8-3x.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Thanks for clarifying. As much as I would love to say 2X I must say 1X. The buck and ram are damn close though. I just bought a 22 revolver so I may try my luck again next week. I have yet to shoot it.

Well I went back to the range. Since I had the option of open sights or scoped, my old eyes chose two pistols with red dot scopes, neither of which I have shot in some months. A Sig Trailside, and a SA .38 Super.

I was too inconsistent. I nailed a couple of them, but missed terribly on others. I printed 4 targets, but only had enough .38 Super to shoot one.

Great shooting, Walkalong.

Your best RF looks like #1, with an 8-3x, and your CF = 8-1x, the best CF score so far.

Thanks for shooting.

it would be interesting to see what loads your using for the competition shot off a bench at 30 feet to see what the tightest possible group you could have gotten would look like. i plan to bench my RIA and see what i can do at 25 yards, though im not sure how to shoot an auto from a bench, sandbags are not readily available to me so...., rolled up towels, pillow, backpack or something:confused:?

I was hoping to get to the range yesterday or today to play with these targets a bit, but it doesn't look like it's gonna happen. I'll give this thread a gratuitous bump anyway.

Just got back from the range, so I thought I'd post these...

22Target.jpg

S&W Model 617, outdoors, Federal "Champion" ammo (the cheap kind), 10 yards.

38Target.jpg

S&W Model 67, .38 Special, outdoors, 158 grain LSWC handload, 10 yards.

Since I haven't participated in one of these before, I didn't know if "do-overs" are OK. I can probably tighten up my groups some if it's OK to shoot several targets and post the best one...

Well, me either. But...you tied both the RF and CF score - 9-1x (MagicHelmt) and 8-1x (Walkalong), respectively (I'm officially abstaining since I had the advantage of designing the shoot) - so I'm inclined to invite multiple entries. Heck, let's make a horse race out of it.

Even though the CF makes bigger holes, it seems a wee bit tougher. Can anyone shoot a CF "10"?

BTW, Tequila - don't know if it's a typo, but the RF can be shot at 7 yards. Were these shot DA or SA? Either way, nice job!

MrB

MrB,

Both were shot single action. I shot the RF at 10 yards because I would have to have been in front of the firing line to shoot at 7 yards, so I just shot both from 10 yards.

TM

Here's my effort. I score it 6-1X. I'm going to blame the flyer to the lower right of the duck on the ammo, the rest I'll take responsibility for. Particularly the "X" on the turkey. :) This is with my Ruger Single Six, 5 1/2" barrel, Winchester Wildcat 22LR, indoors at 7 yards.

This was my fifth time at the range, and the first time where my shooting was worse than the time before instead of better. I even quit early to avoid getting too frustrated and grinding in bad habits. I think I need to start dry firing between range visits.

Thanks Mr. Borland for setting up a match again this month!

need to really focus on your trigger pull, also consider keeping a consistant aimpoint .....if you look 4/5 of your groups are pretty good, but you are not really hitting in the same region of the target. but i do this also and am just trying to help. i now have a total of 500 rounds through my 45 auto and hope i am getting better but i have not dated my targets and cant really keep track of improvements.
