I'm looking for a hunting load for my No.5 mk1 "jungle carbine". I believe it has a 19.5" barrel.

I have IMR 4064 and H335.

I have 125 gr. Sierra Pro Hunter, 150 Speer spitzer and Remington 180 core locks.

I doubt I'll be taking any shots beyond 150 or 200 yds. and would appreciate any imput as to a good load from the short barrel.

Ill offer my advice.......but it ain't free

When the shootin is short and the critters are mean it's best to err on the side of extra penetration AKA heavy bullets

now for the bill.....

You gotta shoot in my "carbine" match I'm about to post up

I agree with Krochus, on hogs a heavier bullet is the way to go. Tracking a wounded boar can be an risky thing. Use a load that will penetrate deeply and put the animal down with authority.

Of the two powders you own 4064 is definitely the one to use here. H335 is way fast. With 150 gr bullets 4064 is the ideal speed. With 180 gr bullets is only slightly fast.

I’d work up loads with both the 150 & 180 gr bullets. Use what your rifle likes best. If it’s a tie go with the 180’s.

I really appreciate ya'lls advice. I don't have a chrono and I'm trying to get that "majic" load. Last year I shot a hog with s & b 150 and it did very well. Hopefully this season I'll get a buck, but if not it wasn't in the cards. Last year I didn't even see a buck and I spent more time in the woods than I ever had, but I did manage to get a hog.

Would H335 be a good powder for a 125 gr?

Yes, H335 is great with the light bullets.

From Hodgdon Site.

The only bad marks against h335 is that particularly in short bbls and in large quantities the report and muzzle blast tends to be..... Shall I say EXTREME

If close enough you could shoot and BBQ a pig all in one fell swoop

IMO, even with 125 gr bullets, H335 is still too fast to be considered ideal. Yeah, it will work. Just develop loads carefully, and keep a sharp eye out for the onset of pressure signs. Due to it's speed, and the ample capacity of the .303 case, it could spike quickly.

Original Sights?

Are you using the GI sights? If so, I would recommend 180 grain bullets loaded as close to GI spec as you can.
If you have a scope or other means of adjustable sights you could use 150's and accomplish what you are wanting to do.
My 2 cents worth. Hope it helps. :)

p.s. Buy yourself a .32 ACP chamber adapter for your JC. I think you will like it. Al

I reload for 7.62x54R with the Sierra 150 and use Varget there. It works, is gentle on cases, and consistent. I do 147gr plinkers with H335, and I agree with others about the muzzle blast, although "satisfying" is the first adjective that I'd use.

I have seen recipes for 150-ish weights using Re15 as well, although that's pretty scarce these days.
