Hey Folks....
New here.....and I guess kinda 're-new' to the gun world. Inadvertently took some time off from the shooting world without even realizing it while I got a Family going. Fast forward to the 2020's and 'Rip Van Winkle' woke up to a 'new world'.......it's a strange place! Back in the 70's and 80's when the local hardware store not only sold guns and ammo, they knew you.

Came out of hibernation to teach my Son how to use and respect firearms.......We started with BB guns as everyone has since He was about 10.......We have a blast, as He learned how to handle a gun. There's always a competition going on.....who washes the car/who chooses the restaurant, ect.

When He turned 15 We gave Him his 1st 'real gun', a Steyr Zepher II .22 LR. with a Mannlicher stock. He took to with the excitement that would make any Dad proud, and with ongoing training, is becoming quite proficient.

This past Christmas he turned 16, and We gave Him a matched pair of CZ452 Americans in .22LR with Leupold scopes.

With the Steyr, we had to 'pass it' back and forth to keep the competition even using the same rifle......it worked just fine. BUT with these CZ's matched up, we can now speed things up, and still be on an even footing.

My Brother works in the trade, a manager at a local gun shop, and has been a blessing weening me back into the field. Not to mention His ability to find such things as these.

Been 'bit' in a few sites trying to find a Family friendly one.....just too old to be interested in putting up with ignorance. Seem to have found a good site here with shared values. Looking forward to getting to know Folks.

Welcome. I took a 20 year hiatus from shooting for pretty much the same reasons and got back into it a number of years ago. The members here are great as far as answering the many questions I had, especially when I started reloading. This is the only site I’m on as the members and moderators are a great group of people.

Welcome to the forum!
I think we all put our hobbies on the back burner when we are growing the family, I know I did.
I think we need to go back to getting to know the guys at the gun shop before they can sell us guns. It only takes a few rounds down range before you can tell the clowns from the serious shooters.
Those are some nice looking guns you got there.

Welcome Hacksguns!:)
Yes, the "gun world" has changed a bit since the 70's and 80's. Luckily my wife and I live in an area where the local farm and ranch supply store is still one of the best stores to buy guns and ammo, and they even know our dog!:D
Besides, THR is still one of the best places on the internet to read, learn and write about guns and ammo - because it IS the best forum (with the best people) on the internet.

Thats a sweet Steyr, can honestly say Ive never seen one in the wild. The CZs are no slouches either!
Geez, wish my old man had started me on some quality iron like that. Instead I got initiated with some of the most notoriously bad (and cheap) rifles ever.
Not that I still didnt have a blast clearing jams and chasing springs across the floor.....just wish we'd done more actual shooting! :)

'Re-new' to the gun world. Hahaha--perfect! Me, too. And pretty new to this site myself. My young'uns are far away and more sophisticated with their firearms than I am, but my wife has embraced our "new hobby" of shooting pretty enthusiastically. .22 single action revolvers at the range for now, along with a Heritage revolving rifle. See ya around the forums!

@Hacksguns welcome to the forum. Really nice looking rifles you have there.

I too was forced to stop shooting and hunting for a few years, but due to injury. Started back up with a Marlin, Glenfield m60 and a savage m111 savage in 243 win.

Back in the day I wasn't 'All that'......but sure was some of THAT. I had my day in the sun, but now I have made this all about my Son. My old collections have all become history, and now our new gun cabinet* is being filled in with His choices and likes NOT mine. *("Which we built together......We are old fashioned 'home schoolers', not just becoming so because of COVID......so we teach LIFE SKILLS as part of our core curriculums, and woodworking is something handy to know as you go through life.")

But having said all that, I can see His tastes in guns has His Father's influence. As he says in response to THAT, " ......It worked for You, pretty sure it'll work for Me."
Yeah it does bring a little moisture to the eye when you see your Children turning out OK. Sniffle sniffle....

Of course at His age these guns are all 'mine', but chosen after lengthy discussions, and looking around by Him. We're heavy on the .22LR's because of training, and of course ammo prices to afford our said rigorous training/FUN at the range.

His first outing with the Remington 700 @ 300 yards.("Was out with my Brother, and was His Remington, not Our's.") His first two groupings. We decided He was a huge fan of not only .223, but of long range shooting......only way to get out of there that day was running out of ammo.

YES, matter a fact beside being a huge fan of pictures, I tend to become a wee 'chatty' when I feel comfy.:D

Welcome back! I also took a long hiatus from guns, but mine wasn't related to getting a family going. I think you'll find that there's a lot of good stuff out there these days, assuming you can actually get your hands on it.

Those sound like outstanding choices. I'm a big fan of the 'lowly' .22. It's the cheapest way to get range time in, and it's a whole lot of fun.

Glad to see a family making the sacrifice to homeschool their kids, it’s not the easiest choice but a far cry better than sending them off to government schools.

You have fine tastes in firearms! And woodworking is another of my passions, they seem to go together. It looks like your young man has grown to be a respectable member of society. I’m sure he stands out (in the best of ways) when out in public. It’s what I tell my kids, you all will be “different” than what is in society, embrace it and don’t forget your upbringing.

THANKS! I'm an ADMIN on another site, and it's a joy when EVERYONE helps by keeping their eyes open.

'Lowly .22'......the Boogyman wouldn't think so if it were in the right hands. Nah.....they earned their keep in my mind.

That young man is not only a good shot, but an excellent woodworker as well. You did GOOD.
THANKS John! We have been blessed with the ability to be there for our Children and pass on what we have learned in life.......sadly there's so many youth aren't prepared for what's out there.

THANKS! We homeschooled Our Daughter who's now HAPPILY married and they are both paramedics. And after a few years in the public school system We decided We were going to go the same route with Our Son. It's just insanity out there some of the stuff 'they' deem worthy of teaching our children. ALL THAT STUFF aside, it's been decades since schools taught 'life lessons'......check books, shopping skills, caring for a home.....Family. Nah, We indeed are blessed to be able to, and help out in our area other Families who struggle with it.
