just a word of warning on gun cleaning

the other day i was cleaning several guns with birchwood and casey gun scrubber on a table cloth in my bathroom. i had a very small fan running (the kind you run to keep your mirrors from fogging up while you shower). after about an hour in there, i began to get dizzy, and my head started to spin. i took a step back, fell over, and hit my head. i was able to crawl out of there and get on my feet again. i think that if i would have been knocked out when i hit the floor, i could have been asphyxiated by the fumes, especially since i was the only one there. Gun scrubber is a relativley mild cleaner too, so be careful

Glad you're okay. I won't use Gunscrubber, Sweets' or any of he other strong cleaners indoors.

When I need to use that stuff, I go to the garage and leave the door open.

BTW: MPro 7 is non toxic.

Bathroom ventilators are only good for keeping the gasses from grossing out the rest of the household. They're certainly not adequate for complying with "use only in a well ventilated area" warnings.

A friend of mine was cleaning bathroom tiles with ammonia and the ventilator running. Bad mistake, which won't happen again, and recovery took months.

Using any cleaner that generates fumes requires well ventilated area! Hope your alright & may we all not have to learn this lesson the hardway

I'm sorry about your accident, but I'll say this. First off there isn't much you need harsh chemicals for in gun cleaning. I'm using Butch's now for copper fouling, but other than that it's all light oil, naptha(flammable as hell), or CLP. Not very toxic. I tried Slip 2000 gas piston and choke tube cleaner out, it's a alkaline orange type cleaner, absolutely great on AR gas parts, no fumes.

Any brake-clean type stuff has very bad stuff in it. The enviro "friendly" stuff is usually better for the ozone, worse for your brain and kidneys. If you're going to use it invest in some chemical gloves, a respirator, and goggles. I've used a ton of nasty things as a Navy aircraft painter, voice of experience. I hate to say, but the back of the can coulda told you that you would get dizzy and pass out, not all those warnings are just for liability's sake. Be safe.

Glad you are OK. Fumes are quite dangerous. I had a job shortly after High School where we painted some small items. Nothing on a large scale. However, the had these huge exhaust fans and warning sings all over the place. Some of the older guys told me that some one in the " paint room" almost died due to lack of venitilation. It sneaks up on you and is lethal. Now that OSHA is in the mix, they require all the signs and warnings. However, mnay people don't think of that at home.

Gun Scrubber = Brake Parts Cleaner

You can get it at the auto parts store much cheaper, same stuff.

Also, you should not think of it as a "mild cleaner." CLP is a 'mild" cleaner. Gunscrubber is full of volatile chemicals that vaporize into the air FAST. That's why it dries so fast.

I always wear at least one nitrile mechanics' glove when working with solvent-type cleaners.

The first time I became acquainted with Sweets 7.62 was in a discount store. I saw a bottle on a bottom shelf, squatted down to check it out. Being somewhat addicted to the smell of Hoppes #9 I had to check this stuff out. Took off the cap and took a big whiff, fell over backwards.
