95 gr RNFP plated xtreme bullet pushed by 4.0 gr of AutoComp. I keep it loaded with factory HP's in the nightstand.

I haven't forgotten about more results.
Was unable to make it to the range today. :banghead:
More results on the way soon.

Rats, had to work this Sat this weekend :banghead:, just beat Sunday, so I didn't make it to the range.
Starting to get withdrawal symptoms. :)

Hopefully I can get a payback day mid week.
Sorry for the long delay with the results,
I haven't forgotten......

Dudedog, fully understand.

I took half a day off Friday. But too windy and rain at times. Had rifles, handgun, chrony and BT adapter, umpteen reloads to try. Forgot AR magazines, had to stop and buy one, darn. ;) All I could do was make sure the scope was sighted in.

Saturday, snow, rain, sunshine, sleet (or hail), snow, and windy. Gotta love Ohio weather!

Sunday, my body said I was taking a rest.

Hope you're able to get out there. My gear seems to be mocking me. lol!

Snuffy sent me some nice 120 powder coated lead bullets he made so I started to look for load data for them in .380
Looked at Lyman 49 but am scratching my head.
90gr XTP WIN231 2.1-3.2 MAX
95 FMJ WIND231 2.1 - 2.9 MAX
120 gr Lead WIND 231 2.1 -3.2 MAX

So a 33% heavier Lead bullet has the same MAX listed charge as a 90gr jacketed
If I was guessing (not a good idea) I would have said maybe 15-20% less for the heavier bullet and maybe another 5% less because it is lead
so with W231/HP38 (90gr MAX) - 25% = guess 2.4 MAX and 2gr to start.
Am I nuts or are they?

Dudedog, I don't think you're nuts! :D

RCBS shows a 125 gr. LRN with 1.9-2.1 gr. charge for W231. Velocity 649-686.
And HP-38 2.0-2.2 with velocity at 693-724.

Maybe Lyman got 3.2 backwards and it should be 2.3 gr.?

For a cartridge that small, seating depth can make a huge difference. What was the COL listed for those?

As mentioned in post #55, and you have seen; .380 loading manuals are all over the map.

I wanted to use the 100 gr plated/WW231 combo to produce the same recoil as the 90 gr Gold Dots I carry in the gun. So I used one of the online recoil calculators to decide my desired velocity (843 fps for 100 gr vs 933 fps for the Gold Dots), started low, and worked my way up until my chronograph showed the desired velocity. No pressure signs of course, at .380 pressures I don't think you'd have any warning before blowing a case. But Freedom Munitions loads the exact same bullet to 955 fps (in my gun), I don't hear of anything blowing up but I suspect the Freedom loads are pretty tough on the gun with long term use, if every lot is that hot.

Lyman list .980 OAL for the 120 LRN
Hodgdon lists .980 OAL for a 100FMJ 2.9-3.1 HP38/W231

Thinking I will start at about 1.9gr.

I haven't forgotten about posting results.
Work is just not cooperating.
Coming soon, I hope............

Finally some results - more to come

I would like to thank everyone for their kindness in PIFing me bullets to test.
Artofgolf, BDS, Duvel, jell-dog, kcofohio, Vaalpens and snuffy, and I know I am forgetting someone (more than someone here, if I left you out I apologize, and I have notes someplace on who you are but can't seem to find my list. :banghead:  )

First some chrono #s. Pistol kahr P380 2.5" barrel
Discovered something interesting, not quite sure how the chrono is coming up with muzzle energy. I need to recompute because I entered an incorrect bullet weight and my #s don't match it's numbers I used V*V*W/450240 using fps for v and gr fo w anyway some #s

The 4.0 CFE-P loads are all stout and at the top end of the range...Listed MAX
No pressure signs and shot fine.
It looks like after almost 600 rounds my little Kahr P380 is starting to loosen up.
Wonder how many other ones are in private hads that have more than 500 rounds thru them :) (more to come with mine)

Still more to test
Targets follow.I have pretty much decided I like #2 and ZIP so more testing with those powders coming.
Some Targets follow.

I might have posted, can't remember, getting old sucks!

I use Ranier Lead Free 100g with 3.0g of 231.

It cycles my LCP just perfect!

OK targets. Small squares are 1"
Pistol Kahr P380, barrel 2.5" Short!
Sort of windy on the range but shouldn't really matter other than it kept blowing targets and notes away if I wasn't careful.
I tested at 7 yards with my hands resting on a towel on a plastic Wally World portable table.
While the table is fine for gun cleaning in my garage with a cement floor it was less than perfect on the uneven hard packed dirt of the range.
So call it resting on a semi stable rest.

More targets
Hard to say, because of the shooter and the rest the results are somewhat inconsistent.
For practice any of the bullets will work. Still haven't decided and I have more testing to do now that maybe now that I have more round thru the pistol I can back off a bit from the high/MAX side of the charge range. (need to do functioning work ups all over again)

Just for fun I loaded some of the bullets with light charges in 9mm.
No failures but these are close to being to light to function.
Springfield 9mm 1911 5" S+B SP
Mixed range brass
9 rounds 7 yards standing (no support)
The powder and charge were not picked for accuracy but to create a light as possible load to be closer to .380 pressures and vels.

Not .380 but I will throw in this target.
Snuffy sent me some Harley Orange Powder coated ~126 bullets he cast and coated. Cone flat nose.
Thanks Snuffy - Used them in 9mm not .380 wanted to see what they would do there and give them a chance to show what they could do.
They shot quite will for me in 9mm.
Springfield 1911 9mm 5"
S+B SP, mixed range brass 4.5gr WSF 1.10 OAL

PS on occasion I can manage to shoot a decent one, not often but every now and then.

More .380 tests to come, Thanks to everybody I have lots of things to test.!:cool::cool:

Great!

Looks like they shoot good for you DD. That's all I load in 9mm now, I get similar results.

A word of explanation, Harley orange refers to the color on the small Harley bikes that were produced when Harley was bought by the AMF corp. Harley even made snowmobiles for a while.
