Hello,

New to the forum and looking for some help. I will be picking up a Sig Sauer 556xi at my local FFL later this week and am excited about shooting my first semiautomatic rifle other than a .22. I was wondering what your opinions are on the 556 and 556xi. I hear mixed reviews.

Also, I would like to go out and effectively "range test" during the first shoot. I am wondering what things to look for, what parts to examine with most scrutiny, and what complaints about 556xi to test out of the box. I am also wondering what you do to test your rifles - once I get out on the range, what are some "musts" to make sure the rifle is everything I want it to be?

Thanks for all your help.

I have the 556 not sure what a xi is. one thing to be careful of is that it shoots out the brass about 2 feet back and 20 feet to the right. Really angered the guys at the range the first time I took it out. It positively ejects! Wonderful rifle, and although I don't want to anger the AR people, I like mine better than my A2 HBar but I might like the really light M4 carbine more than the Sig 556 for being handy. Don't have one of those but like my buddies!

Welcome to the forum!

Stand up, aim, and pull trigger 100 times or so. It'll go bang every time, and as long as no excess parts fly off, that ought to meet every expectation you have at the present time.. ;)

The rifle will shoot better than you can, and you're not going to find any flaws with it. Just take it out and shoot the crap outta it and enjoy. After 10,000 rounds you can assess it's mechanics.

Enjoy it, it's a superb rifle. Soon you'll want the 556 Pistol, and then a Tax Stamp for it and a SBR conversion, and then a nice suppressor that fits both, and then a... > (it never ends) <...

The XI version hasn't been out for very long, so you will be the one telling us how it is.

As for me, I very much like the SIG 556. Mine is a first generation model and I've had no problems with it. I think of it as an AK with every deficiency corrected.

The SIG 556xi Standard seems like it would make for an extremely versatile platform in that you can readily change out barrels and the lower receiver to switch between 3 different calibers, along with their respective magazine designs. I would be very interested in hearing more about how well this rifle performs for you at the range.

This is 556. 556xi is new and replaces 556 and 556R. Should be an excellent gun.

I had one for a couple years. Always wanted a 551 rifle and thought this would be cool. Mine was an early production model and it had a lot of QC issues. The only things that I did like about it was because it was so front heavy follow-up shots were easy. And it odd always fire when you pulled the trigger. That's about all the positives I can list about it. Got rid of it during the last big panic and finally drank the AR-15 kool-aid. Bought a Colt with Magpul furniture and couldn't be happier with it. Well balanced, shoots steel cased, lightweight all the stuff people always tried to convince me.

Hopefully, you will really like it. It's a niche rifle without a lot of support and I was disappointed to say the least once the novelty of it wore off.

I do not know about the XI, but my 556 Classic is a superb weapon. Runs great, is very accurate, muzzle rise is less than with my AR, it's easy to shoot well, both extended and folded, it uses my AR 15 mags. Just nothing to not like about it.

I'm not getting rid of my AR, period, but I really love my 556 Classic.

Thanks everybody for the great replies. I just got a call from my FFL that it came in today. I'm super excited! The only other weapon I have right now is a Glock 19, and I'm happy to get a rifle. Once I pick it up I'll post some pictures and my first impressions.

I've been eyeing a Sig556xi for awhile but haven't gotten one yet. Id be interested to hear how your Pros and Cons are after the new wears off.

Maybe asking for opinions before the purchase would be a better idea?
I have owned two Sig rifles, both were complete lemons.
Take a minute and do a search here under my screen name and Sig and you'll see a year long horror story that ended with me trading the thing off and buying something that actually worked, was built right and didn't require a 55 gallon drum of red locktite to keep the parts from falling off.
And the Customer service was the worst I have ever delt with.
Good Luck with that.

Averageman, I hope I don't have that experience. I was looking up rifles for a long time. My friend has an AR15 and I liked it, but I wanted something different. I have heard a large majority of people with nothing but good things to say about the 556, but nothing about the xi. I have read some horror stories, but not near as many as positive reviews. The idea seems like a good one, and I found one on Gunbroker for $1000, so I thought I would try it. It wasn't until after I purchased it that I heard more xi specific complaints.

The 556 was a nightmare at first but Sig seems to have fixed it, and everyone I know that owns one (small group haha, but still) loves it. Crazy accurate and light recoil. Not my flavor but in sure that you will love it. Enjoy, and keep us posted!

Mike.

I've got a very early 556 that has the canted rail, it kind of bothers me but since I shoot it scoped it doesn't matter; a gen. 2 which has been flawless; a 556 pistol which I SBR'd; a original 552 SBR and a 553 pistol which has also been SBR'd.

I have several AR's, a couple HK-93's, Styer AUG and even an Daewoo AR110C but the SiG-55X's are by far my favorite.

I've heard (have not handled one yet) that the triggers are mushy (kind of like the 522's) compared to the earlier 556's and if you get one that has a loose gas tube (will rattle) you have to send it in for repair, which takes 2-3 weeks last I heard.

I'm wanting a 556XI but due to my experiences with the early 556, early 556R & early 522 I'm waiting until they shake the bugs out.

Also, as far as accessories go, does anyone know what handguards/rails will fit on the xi? I know it takes the same type as the Sig MPX, but I'm not sure what that means for handguard and rail availability. I would really like a quad rail so I can put a light and a vertical grip on it, but I don't know where to start looking.
